I have been looking to downsize from my Cranchi Pelican 32 to a smaller and more economical boat. I have seen an Antares 760 fitted with a single Nanni dti 200 diesel engine.

I did a little research and found that the engine is a marinised toyota diesel and that opinion is divided as to their reliability.

What is the latest thinking on them?

opinion is divided as to their reliability.

Ive had a quick internet search on Nanni reliability and could not find anything about them being unreliable? I would have thought that being a Toyota base engine would mean they are reliable units. I have a T4 200 and am very impressed with it. I am a forum newbie though so forgive me if I am way out on my logic.

Not sure but isn't this the one with the cracked head issues? If so I've heard a few that have failed in this way with not much back up from the manufacturer.

I don't think the failure of both engines in the same boat point to a common fault more likely an installation issue
I'm not familiar with the marine version of the engine but the automotive version is generally good although doesn't like being overheated as it will crack the head
Personally I'd be happier with a toyota based engine with no electronics to go wrong & cheap toyota service & repair parts available
I'd probably strip off heat exchangers for a good chemical clean out & then get an exhaust gas temperature test done & be prepared to re prop if EGT was excessive .
I bought an EGT probe & readout for around £100 so I can occasionally check everything is still ok
All marine engines give problems (just search volvo faults on here) but the fact there are no electronics & a toyota base engine would appeal to me

Thanks for your replies.

Stuartwineberg and volvopaul.... I had looked at that thread and hence my question. Its the cracked head that got me worried. Has that problem now been solved?

Inception..... yes the MF 805 looks a good boat and is going to be a serious contender.

Not sure I'd contact UK dealer for info, either way an older engine could be suspect , from memory new heads were not available, maybe it's been sorted now. This is typical of a low volume engine supplier.

Sorry, as Paul says you would need to check. I only quoted the thread to bring you up to the same amount of info as we have

I have a nanni 4.390tdi (200hp) and this what i can tell you about them . They are Toyota base engine from the land cruiser range and yes they did have problems with cracked heads on the forth cylinder if you look on the Australian 4x4 forums but mainly due to towing heavy loads. The reason they were cracking was due to the thermostat not opening until 80 deg and it was solved by a lower rating thermostat and also there was some concern over the quality of the metal used in the casting process of the heads so the 4x4 guys used AMC made heads which seemed to be a better quality heads. The nanni has 71deg thermostat opening and not the 80deg like the 4X4 have. The parts for servicing are about half the price from a uk 4x4 supplier and there are few that supply the Toyota land cruiser engine. The classic tell tell sign if the head is gone is that it will pressurize the header tank and dump the water out but this happens only when you are at about 2000rpm and above.I like the engine due to they are simple to work on and they are a fairly basic engine and there are plenty of parts suppliers for the base engine. There are hundreds of 200hp nanni engines and you only here of the bad ones and not how reliable they are.

Thanks Jamie... very useful information.

If I go ahead I will proceed with caution taking into account yours and other's helpful comments.

Cheers
