name for owning too many boats - latin scholars

I applaud the effort to find a Greek word for this concept. I have the good fortune of being of Greek descent. In the Greek school at our local church, the instructor told us that English has three words for just about any concept. There will be a plain word of German origin, such as "House". Then there will be a fancy word of Latin origin, such as "Chateau". Then there will be words of Greek origin for bigger concepts, such as "Oikos", which is the ancient Greek word for "House", and gives us the word "Economy".

Regarding the Greek word for "Boat", my Greek cousins generally use the word "Kaiki", but I see that the origin of that word is actually Turkish. Google Translate favors the word "Varka", but that word is from Latin. My cousins generally reserve the word "Ploio" for "Ship", so that wouldn't be right either. I apologize that I can't help.

I believe that the Latin Barca may be derived by the Greek Varka (which is pronounced the same because Greeks do pronounce V as similar to B). After all Latin too is greatly influenced by Ancient Greek, containing many of its words and expressions. Lets not forget that Before becoming the Roman Empire, the south of the Italic peninsula was the "Magna Graecia" = The "Great Greece"

^^ It's the other way around. My father was very disappointed when he came to the United States and found that his last name had gone from starting with the second letter of the alphabet, Beta (pronounced VEE-ta), to one of the last letters of the alphabet, V.

Dr. Dyl,
Collecting boats is NOT an affliction.
It is a superpower!
Fellow Dockster Jack has discovered that it is often cheaper to buy another classic plastic boat than to purchase the gear piece by piece to fix up another boat... if you have the room. He is at 14 boats and counting.

There are many answers to this.

Still, it all ended when he married one of them - though we never thought it would happen; he was pretty good at running :D We could never understand how he did it though; he was not particularly handsome, but all the girls were absolute stunners (including the one he married).

But I think we need a new thread which will probably be banned by the ‘Girlie Admins’. ;) :D

..... θηλυκό μεταβίβαση? (Y)
