Some folk I know swear that changing a yachts name is very bad luck, so two questions,

When I purchase the new (pre-owned) boat:

Should I change names (I would like to)

and

What rituals are supposed to fend off this bad luck?

- For those concerned, I am not in the least bit superstitious, - just interested to know thoughts...

:)

To fend of this apparent bad luck you are supposed to remove ALL references to the old name from the boat.

Just buy the new names from me, i use specially blessed vinyl!
Out of interest has anyone who has changed a boat name had any more disasters than boats with original name?

YES!

Dont do it.

We tried all the rituals... (Well one anyways....) and the boat turned into a money pit.

BTW Csail.. I have been meaning for about 4 years to get some names for Talisman made up by you...

Can you remind me please in March?

Ta

It's just a bit of Victorian sentimentality. Navies have been changing ships' names for hundreds of years quite happily.

I have also been told it is really unlucky to change the name, but I ask why you want to?

That name is the boats name and if you change it you remove its personality. In my opinion if you cannot put up with the name then do not buy the boat! The name is part of the boat!

No problem

Poseidon is a personal friend of mine (well, as much as one can be friends with a god) and so the following is "direct from the horse's mouth" as it were. I should of course at this point, point out that in no way am I suggesting that there is any resemblance between Poseidon (or Neptune as he is also known) and a horse. Dealing with gods is very complicated......

When someone buys a pre-owned boat Poseidon expects them to change the name. Indeed Poseidon even has a procedure for modifying his boat ownership records when a sale takes place. No special ritual or ceremony is required, unless you want one for your own purposes of course, Poseidon will automatically make the necessary name change in his records. No charge is made for this service, though I can reveal that the god is particularly partial to champagne should you choose to pour some over the side for him.

What really annoys Poseidon is when an owner changes the name of his or her boat without selling her. There is no procedure for this type of name change and the resulting searches and record updates take time and effort that Poseidon can well do without. There is a charge for this type of name change, one that Poseidon himself will levy at some unspecified point in the future, probably when you are farthest from land!

I hope that clears this up for you?

On a related topic, I've seen a number of forumites who post with a line under their signature along the lines of "used to post as XXXX", I was wondering how you change your posting name as I think having your boats name as your posting name is a great idea.

All boats are money pits, have feelings and know when to break for maximum disruption.

I don't think changing the name effects these three fundamental laws of boat ownership:D

We changed the name when we bought the boat last year. Had a good ceremony, explained to the 'old girl' why she had to have her name changed, removed al reference to the old name, poured plenty of libations to Neptune witnessed by many and had an excellent party.

She now feels as if she is ours with our nick knacks on board however she befell a disaster at the beginning of the season when the yard re-stepping the mast dropped it! I don't think we can blame Neptune.

Sometimes the name suits a boat, othertimes it does not, change it if you want and have a party!
