This query is prompted by the recent thread on trust and clarity. I bought Freestyle in 2005, complete with a letter addressed to the first owner from HM Customs and excise that includes the words: "we are satisfied that your vessel qualifies for VAT exemption." The vessel name and owner's name and address follows, so everything's hunky dory? Er, no, I say, because the first owner retained the original name, Fondue, when he sold the yacht to the second owner in 1997. That's OK, says the broker, see here is the authenticated SAD, that mentions not just the name but also the engine number and the sail number, and their are five sails on board with that sail number. (Curiously, although the SAD is signed by the same Customs and Excise officer, this states that Fondue is "VAT paid in the E.C.") There are also a bills of sale between the first owner and second owner for a yacht called Fondue and between the second owner and me for a yacht called Freestyle. Well, I figured, sails are easily portable, but engines ain't, so I moved onto radio licensing and EPIRB registration.
The question "what are you fussing about?" will no doubt have occurred to the denizens of this board. Well, it's like this, see. Yesterday, I admired the handiwork of the engineer who had fitted a new engine into Freestyle. So all I've got to link my boat to the boat on the VAT certificate is some tatty bits of cloth.
What will Miss Jobsworth in Latvia make of that lot? Will she insist that I bring the spinnaker into her office to show her the number on it?
No wonder they say a change of name is unlucky.
Oh, and this isn't a plug, but the engine that is mentioned on the VAT certificate is a 1988 Perkins Perama M30 (29 HP), a little over 6000 hours on the clock, with a 2.7:1 reduction gearbox (new in 2003), in good running order, starts easily, approx 2.5 l per hour diesel consumption at 2300, used a little under 0.5 l oil on one 30 hour passage when I ran her at 2600 revs, but used less at my regular cruising revs of 2200 (the revs recommended by previous owner), all owners fastidious about oil changes and laying up, new oil, filters and impellor installed. Yes you've guessed it, there is a second hand engine for sale, but not of course via this forum. It'll be going onto eBay next week if I haven't had a decent offer by then.
