And it may surprise some to learn that some boats can track to windward in heavy weather under just a storm jib.

My gaffer will heave to under a close reefed staysail, only. We don't go anywhere like that, but it's quite comfy.

They actually do!

Most go better with lots of rolls rather than a few. The sail can be fuller than ideal, so keeping it small in comparison to the reefed main helps.
Of course some yachts don't really go well to windward in rough weather whatever sails they have.
