Tohatsu Part

I am installing an 8hp Tohatsu outboard to my boat (to replace a decommissioned ancient diesel). It will have a standard Tohatsu remote morse system. This part is a mystery to me. Can anybody tell me what it is for? I can find no mention of it in the (pretty useless ) owners manual.

I hadn't, but I will. My model is a new MFS8B. Thanks.

Probably part of the remote control system. Are you installing the engine with remotes ?

There is a more extensive parts catalogue at Parts Catalog : , Reliable Source of Nissan Tohatsu Boat Marine Genuine OEM Parts
but only goes up to 2018

Is it not shown in the owners manual or the installation instructions ?

I know this is a different engine, but the part you have shown is similar to the piccy. its part of the steering.

Thanks Vic. It could be part of this set-up https://www.boats.net/catalog/tohatsu/outboard/8hp/mfs8b-2021/remote-control-parts It looks like the part in the dotted box on this diagram called the Drag Link Assembly. Any idea what that would do?
one end is attached to the bracket ( steering hook plate) bolted to the ( vertical) steering shaft.

I have not worked out what the other end is attached to !

I think to see this you need to refer to the parts catalog I referred to in # 4. Not all the pages are shown in the link to Boats.net

It will only be of interest if you are fitting it with remote steering, which I assume you are not. You'll fit it and tighten the steering friction so that it is fixed and steer using the boats own rudder and tiller wont you ?

You are not fitting a short shaft outboard on a bracket to a sailing boat are you ?

VicS is partly right one end connects to the bracket on the outboard and the other end connects to the (teleflex) cable, and as you are fitting a remote system you will need that item. Please Ignore the picture as this is totally wrong as it is a hydraulic steering system not a cable system.
