Mystery box fibreglassed into the hull of a Fairline 27

This morning I tested the 'ballast' with a metal detector and got a strong spike, so I drilled into it to find what is probably a lead alloy - very heavy but not as malleable as pure lead. So that answers my first question.

Second question: what I should do about it .........
After reading Little Sisters response above I asked the wife (10.5 stone) to stand on the starboard side above where the ballast would be. The list reduced from 3" to 3/4".
The helm seat and most of the stern seats are to starboard (the gate to the bathing platform being to port). The fuel and water tanks evenly straddle the centreline but the holding tank (empty) is to starboard.
As I row up to the stern of the boat, it offends me to see her listing, but I guess it's more important how she handles underway. Given the above, it is likely that when motoring there is no list, So, on that basis I've decided to leave it alone.

Thank you all for your helpful responses.

Hans Solo is still in there somewhere.
I used bags of lead shot with a previous boat to correct trim imbalance - this worked well for me.

mine lists to starboard, the boat not my wife :-) , but the original single 110amp battery, mounted starboard, has been replaced with 3 x 100amp batteries each weighing 27kg so 54kg of extra weight to starboard plus battery combiner and extra cabling enough to provide a 2ins list, aesthetically it does drive me a bit crazy too
