Hi there,

I've been asked by a colleague if I can help find someone to take away a hull from her garden. Her partner died a few years ago and left this as an unfinished project, along with a horde of sails in the attic. Myself and a friend are pondering over what sort of yacht it is, I've only got these photo's and they're not brilliant. It's a long shot, but does any one recognise this?
Thanks in advance! :)

The hull appears to be metal, and despite being neglected it is not covered in rust bleeds. So I would say it's aluminium.

Lots of home-build metal boats are one-off designs, or at least small runs made by different people. So there may not be a make and model as such. Did her husband leave a big pile of paper somewhere, the plans? These would say who designed it.

Looks like GRP . Look at first piccy the gunwhale looks a bit raggy and has a a chunk taken out of it .

Highly unlikely that it's aluminium, unless it was pressed out, which again is highly unlikely as a huge production run would have been required to justify the cost of tooling. Volume production aluminium boats such as OVNI are made by welding together "planks" of that material and are characterised by their chines, similar to plywood boats. My guesss is that it's GRP. No idea what it is though:)

My guess is that it is a Robert Tucker design.

It looks very similar to what started out as the Tucker 23 and developed into the Hawksbill 24.

His grp designs may also have been built in alloy.

Half a biggish boat hull upside down can make a good shed!
Wee bit harsh to condem the little boat. I am sure some hard up sailer would be delighted to get his hands on it. Think there should be a web site for abandoned boats or projects which have been given up on and going for a song or less.

Have you thought that through?

Myriad threads on here warn against being seduced into refitting a cheap boat, let alone fitting one out. The costs of getting everything to make it into a pretty uninspiring boat will be way beyond the reach of a hard up sailor.
Another thread points to the cheapness of ready-to-go older boats at the moment.

Been there, done that over the last 50 years. It all depends on what is included with the hull. As you imply, if is just a hull forget it but if it includes all the main items such as sails, mast and even an engine in need of a bit of attention (with the exception of a Volvo MDx) then it can be done. As regards getting a cheap ready to go boat, there are a lot of owners living in fantasy land. As an example there are Centaurs with 35 year old Volvo rust buckets with an asking price of 10K. Max price for a Centaur with an MD engine is 5k.
