And did you get ice cream from The Cabin? The best ice cream in Europe.
Oh, yes, I’d forgotten about that.
But I’m afraid nothing compares with the IceCream from Gelateria Dondoli in San Gimignano, Tuscany. Even the memories of childhood can’t top that one !

Just been in the Highlands for a few weeks. Jeez, you go into a shop and be guaranteed it's an English member of staff. Barely a (lovely) Highland accent to be heard.

In Edinburgh, Stockbridge (aka "Little England") has scarcely a local.

They seem to view the higher tax as worth paying to escape from the south, perhaps?
Simply improving the gene pool.

Seamen and those working on moving dive ships have different tax status .
But they are limited to how many days they can reside within the uk per year when not working
I think .
More here.

Seafarers Earnings Deduction | Seafarers Tax Explained
Before anyone thinks RN etc don’t pay tax if they’re away on a ship and they can’t be bothered to read the link, the seafarers exemptions don’t apply to the military.

That is one thing I do miss is the Capaldi's ice cream in Brora, It was a sad day when Mike sold off the business, ice cream is still good but not as good as it was before.

Now I did take the first mate over to Nardini's in Largs for a Knickerbocker Glory, she had not been in a good mood as the road over the top that I took was a bit twisty and by the time we got to Largs she was not too happy, the mood changed after the visit to Nardini's Ice Cream Parlour :D

Best ice cream I’ve ever had in Scotland was at an Italian place in Ayr. No idea what it was called or if it’s still there.
But I can’t think of Scotland and icecream without thinking of the movie Comfort and Joy.

As I understand it, lots of ex Italian POWs stayed on in Scotland after wars end. Many of these opened successful busnisses as mentioned in the ice cream trade. Also a lot of fish and chip shops. All being run by their descendants today.

Zavaronis fish and chip shop in Rothsey was a popular pit stop for visiting submariners. In the day, the refrain 'Mama, she's making chips for tea' was often heard but somewhat unwelcome.

We had the parents stay with us in Wick during the height of Lena's fame, they were glad to get away from the attention.

Dad got called out to a car accident where the car had struck a cow, dad called an Italian friend to see if he was interested in some fresh meat, he hoisted the cow on the crane on the back of the breakdown truck and took it round the back of the café, he went in and struck a deal with the guy, by the time he got back out the cow was gutted and skinned by the guy's mother :)
It was quite tasty, we got some cuts from it.

Did the cow's owner get his money?

Dad gave him £50 for it and he was happy to get that.

A week later a car hit and killed a horse, Dad said no to that :)
Caithness roads are long and pretty straight. Doesn't say much for local drivers.

I remember around Canisbay when I was young and up for the summer there was a young boy who used to take his father's car out and about. He would have been no more than 9, I was told. You would see the car flying along the high road as he was out for a jaunt. I remember his car being pulled out of a ditch by a local tractor.
