There’s a poster on the wall in our hotel room….a picture of this fair town…and a quote….
´This is a beautiful city and worth the trouble travelling thousands of miles to see it’ Torquato Tasso
Fair enough….except he wrote that in 1586
It was hard enough to drive the fifty kilometres from Verona yesterday

Where I started from on my last trip on the Midi. Everything from here is new to me.
And, no, I wouldn't want to swim or dive in there. Too much poop.

The wife said this is our last Italian road trip….the roads are just too tortuous….the potholes…the endless road works…the absolute confusion when following signs…and just the overly complex road system
I must admit I've not had huge problems with Italian roads but I've not driven long distances on them - Tuscany is very much like rural France and around Garda and Como the roads were narrow and busy but OK. The only scary one I've done was the Amalfi coast where the roads are really narrow and twisty with a precipice on each bend and giant tour buses trying to push you off.
Rest of the time I've gone by train.

A couple of years ago we drove from France to Naples  via Florence (y), not the most enjoyable of roads and the motorway sections were little better than the rest and were under constant repair and it seems nothing has changed. We made up for it by diverting to Sardinia for several days where if you enjoy driving that's the place to go. Obviously there must be decent entertaining roads but I expect they are inland and to the North Mille Miglia anyone.

Going home so the wife can see her dog….apparently being alone in a car and hotel with her husband isn’t easy

Destination was in sight but unfortunately we have had to go through the new city and moor on the canal bank on the other side because someone who shall remain nameless got his dates mixed up and there is no mooring until tomorrow. C'est la vie!
