In order to save a 30nm detour we motored for two hours across a shoal area, where nothing but the 2ft rise of tide kept us from grounding. Anchor, staysail, and dinghy all at the ready in case of engine trouble. Beautiful but pretty nerve wracking.

The Comer channel, which is how a deep draft boat can get from the Ragged Islands to the Exumas. Cats can take a different shortcut which has only 3ft at MLW, and the tides here only gain you another 2ft so with our 7ft draft that wasn't an option!
I wondered if it was up that way. In the past we visited the Turks and Caicos, Mayaguana, Cat Island, Exhumation and left from San Salvador. Great memories!!

If my engine had failed at the wrong point I was going to have to do a lot of digging!

I was very conscious that there was a 'death zone' where I was too far from deep water to make it out before the tide dropped too far. That was quite tense.

I'd have been happier if there had been some other boats about, but we were very much on our own out there.
