I just made a post on this on the Malta ORY70 thread

Those things are only helpful if the sternthruster sucks air, which yours/mine/ORY70's doesn't I believe. So not they wont help at all. They'll just make it a bit worse

Yup, coincidence that! I only saw the OR70 pics after I'd posted my thread. It was a passing comment from the marina manager in Croatia when he saw my boat out of the water. Until then I had assumed that the poor performance of my sternthruster (relative to the b/t) was due to having to shift the end of the boat with more resistance to being shifted.
I think I agree with you in that those cowlings will only deflect the sideways force but on the other hand, the s/t on my boat is really quite shallow - see here

and I can imagine that my s/t does suck air in as well as water. Whatdaya think?

Yup, that looks like it could be an air-sucker Deleted User, so maybe the Vetus gizmos would help. I suppose I'd want to watch it operate and look for air sucking. In contrast, the Sq78 set up is below (not my boat; a pic off the net) and I don't think there is any air-suck issue. Hence I'm sceptical about the "ears" on the s/t tube

No definitely not in your case. There seems to be at least 3ft of head above the s/t. One thing I cannot understand though is why the 'ears' in your pic are facing aft rather than on top of the s/t?

Supposedly to deflect the water flow nicely past the legs of the up-down platform, so improving the s/thruster performance. Which I don't buy as a concept, but that's the story...
