My sterndrive's buggered - help please

pg102

Number 15? That be coupler shaft. Best not try straighten it out, lot of power and high rotational speed in that there bit of steel.

Since my UJs are manually lubed ones, can't comment about the sealed ones as I have no experience of changing them.

As someone said, most times difficulty is getting a needle out of place and trapping it twixt cap and trunnion end.

Done it myself loads of times when replacing HGV UJs. The way I do it is to put one cap in about half way, put in the spider, locate the spider into the cap already fitted, press the other cap into place, then press the first cap in and fit that circlips
Second set, get spider into yoke and press one cap in halfway, then the other, press the first all the way in, then press the second in, finally fitting the circlips.

This way you have room to align everything and if a needle is displaced, the spider will push the other cap back out without causing damage.

yep number 15. definitely no needle bearing sitting at the back of the cap, they were all present and in order when I removed the caps after the first one cracked... pretty much installed the way you mentioned in the first example so the cap gave before the circlip.. will give the second method a go.. However, it was notably hard to rotate the cross bearing before enough space was created to install the 2nd circlip, hence my reasoning that something is fundamentally wrong and it's not an install process issue

Ah, there are several types of Hardy Spicer for this drive, you may have been given the wrong type that is too wide.
Were the original UJs sealed or did they have a grease fitting?

Trickett's have four distinct types:

they were also sealed TK... Alpha 1 Gen 2's all have perma lube bearings according to the sterndrive manual

I'm not seeing any grease seals. Did they break up?

Mine are different in that the retainers fit inside the yoke arms.

yep, they either broke up or I removed them TK.....

ok, have ascertained for sure what the issue is... good news is exactly that, now I know, it can be sorted.. bad news, it's as suspected, the coupler shaft yoke ears must be bent... why? I've just fitted a cross and bearing set to the middle section and it went in no problems with both circlips now in place.

oh well, a good excuse NOT to take the boat out in this weather whilst I sort out the latest niggle

Found this little home made tool that some 4x3 mechanic has used to resolve a similar issue... worth a shout I reckon if I can't source a replacement at a reasonable price

btw, apols for the ongoing dialogue on this one, hope I'm not boring you all too much.

I seem to recall the coupler shaft is far less than £100.......or was last time I looked. Only way to truly get the old one right is to metal spray the bores and have them line bored out again, plus a rebalance. IMHO the shaft is scrap given the relatively low cost of replacement and the horrors available if it all went horribly wrong.

I do so LOVE spending other people's money :D

just got home, how do you change the frown icon at the start of a thread on the main motor boat forum page to a happy smiley cheeky chappy face?

...looks like we'll be going boating next weekend after all:cool:

I take it you have it sorted, just goes to prove you can't keep a good man down.

All we need is the weather to improve for next weekend and there will be smiles all round.

Is there a plan for Friday night yet?

Cheers
Paul.

yep, all sorted Paul, the drive's back on the boat. need to get hold of 2 x 316 stainless domed nuts somewhere between M4 and M5 size but US imperial thread.. Cannot launch without them as the Lenco actuator will not be water tight so have emailed Lenco for the exact details.

Friday night, definitely on but no pub decided upon as yet.. will get that sorted by tomorrow...

excellent news Gary!!!!

Well done, and 110% for perseverance and effort.

With everything crossed Volvopaul will cure my gearbox leak on Thursday...however I've gone a broken myself now..

....last Thursday morning getting ready to take the dog for a walk, bent down to pick up my boots and that was it, back pain like I have never experienced before! Spent Thursday, Friday and Saturday flat out on my back unable to move whatsoever.... just managed a few screams every now and again.... honestly I cannot believe the the pain... But with a cocktail of drugs you would not believe and a superb physio I know I actually am now moving again, just.

But booked into Yarmouth on Sunday night so we will see..... SWMBO thinks I'm mad, but got to have something to aim for!
