My sterndrive's buggered - help please

Alpha 1 gen 2 U Joints are Perm-a-Lube spec so they must have the seals I guess mate... the ones I removed did but a couple were far from permanently lubricated

OK, but as P4P says, a bit of grease works wonders in retaining the needles, as you are trying to assemble everything. I feels like you need about 6 hands to do the job!

sometimes this boat maintenance malarky is tantamount to watching paint dry:rolleyes:

Scrubbed up

Painted with Hammerite metal spray paint

as said, waiting for paint to dry.. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

much improved from the original condition though so worth the wait

And the problem being??

I think its 10 till 12 so dont be late!! again, careful as Southampton are playing at home, last game of the season and its all or nothing so there maybe a few tempers around later in the day!

hi G...... just a suggestion, all that hard work, cleaning and painting of the "infamous" u/j,s, its going to be such a shame to "hide em", so instead of fitting new bellows, why not fit a 2ltr lemonade bottle instead so subaqua clubs can come and gaze in ore at your handy work !!!!!!!!!!!!...................... ........ .................. i think its time i left !!!!!........ byeeee

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr

New Gimbal Bearing fitted - Check

Trim Tab refitted and tested - Check

New U Joints fitted - Cheque!!!

Looking like the trial and error approach earlier has bent one of the ears of the Yoke, probably when using the big vice... tried fitting the UJ's and they're a smidge too long, to the extent I've knackered one of the new end caps trying to get it in far enough to get the circlips in place.. prat that I am pushed it too far and split the cap:o

Was going to bring along a couple of the old end caps just in case this happened but didn't and if I'm right about the Yoke, it's time to throw this one away and get a replacement.. upshot is this thing will not be sorted this weekend by the looks of things.

Decision time.. carry on trying to do these UJ's myself or get the chequebook out.. will plod on myself if the weather's going to remain non boaty. stubborn pride I guess.

Pleased about the Trim Tab and Gimbal Bearing but pretty down on the UJ's which is unusual for me, takes alot to piss me off

Pub time I reckon and will come back with new ideas after a pint.

the yoke ears would be unlikely to bend if cast.

how much were you out by, the usual thing is a needle roller escapes and sits on the top of the trunnion stopping the cap going in far enough.

a use full method of checking if you dont have micrometer tools etc is to get 4 nuts 2 washers and a piece of studding. put 2nuts on , then the washers then the other nuts. Adjust so the washers fit to the location grove on either side of the yoke. then try in the other yokes, then you will know if anything is bent.

thanks David.. Definitely no loose needle bearing.. I put alot of pressue on with the vice which prompted me to buy the impact wrench.. Reaing up on 4x4 Trunk UJ threads they talk of bending the yoke with a vice...

in Lazy Jacks for a bite to eat.. Pint in hand, frame of mind settling in to it being one last thing to sort rather than disaster.. Another beer and the world'll be a wonderful place again.. The saints supporters next door look a happy lot too

Which yoke? Driveshaft to coupler, floating yoke or the input shaft?

If input shaft, not difficult but you will need a special wrench and a torque wrench to tighten the seal cap. 200 ft lbs springs to mind for some reason.

Other yokes easy peasy.

floting Yoke TK.. if I understand you correctly that is... the bit that ends up going through the Gimbal Bearing and in to the engine... destructions that came with the UJ kit gave the following install procedure:

1. install one cap far enough that a circlip can be installed at that end
2. intall the other end cap compressng the two against the cirlip already installed.
3. until both are in far enough to install the 2nd circlip.

the first endcap cracked before enough space was acheived to insert the 2nd circlip.

however, another thought is that it mentions putting cross end spacers at the ends of the trunnions (little black washers with a pointy end that slots in to the trunnion). I wonder if removing these will result in being able to get the circlips in place both ends and if so, whether the lack of spacers is an issue

Gary, Ive got a vernier here, if you want to pop around ?
Also got a very hot blowtorch and big hammer and /or grinder for a go at making adjustments.
share your pain :(

Number 15? That be coupler shaft. Best not try straighten it out, lot of power and high rotational speed in that there bit of steel.

Since my UJs are manually lubed ones, can't comment about the sealed ones as I have no experience of changing them.

As someone said, most times difficulty is getting a needle out of place and trapping it twixt cap and trunnion end.

Done it myself loads of times when replacing HGV UJs. The way I do it is to put one cap in about half way, put in the spider, locate the spider into the cap already fitted, press the other cap into place, then press the first cap in and fit that circlips
Second set, get spider into yoke and press one cap in halfway, then the other, press the first all the way in, then press the second in, finally fitting the circlips.

This way you have room to align everything and if a needle is displaced, the spider will push the other cap back out without causing damage.
