My perfect sailing jacket

Dylan
I use craghopper gear. The kiwi jacket seems good value compared to sailing gear in general, though not as durable. Also no doubt you use walking trousers either lined or unlined that are shower proof?

It might pay you to visit Blacks at Lakeside, they have a big selection, jackets and trousers, I got a pair of walking trousers, which were lined waterproof, had fly, extra pockets for less than £35 pounds. Built in web belt. Called Peter Storm. Really comfortable and warm, but not to warm for the summer use.

The 28,000 hydrostatic Head of the Tribord Ozean jacket caught my eye. Very impressed and I'm off to check it out.

I'll see if I can do a review of it.

Did you ever check this out? I'm thinking of getting this, will be doing offshore and quite probably ocean, but this is half the price of the Gill OS1.

Very impressed by the Tribord Ozean 900 as I've said, there are loads of reviews for their stuff....naturally far more common on the continent. I think Decathlon are the only outlet in the UK?

(Sorry, thought I was quoting and replying to JamesUK above...........oh well, its still a bloody good jacket!)

After reading this thread yesterday I was quite taken with one of Tribord's jackets, but I couldn't work out the sizing.

I hate buying clothes online, but they don't seem to list and stores or stockists. I guess I'm out of luck?

Decathlon are the store in the UK stocking Tribord gear.

As per many posts above Decathlon are the UK distributor. Go on their website, if not local to a store, and order as per sizing chart. Not a problem..............

I wanted these which were on offer for £10 each. The missus chose a Gill "Key West" jacket instead. Apart from her colour choice it seems excellent,

Look at the XM range... purpose built for seagoing, come in various 'strengths' and various prices .... and a lot cheaper than Musto!

I bought these recently from a bloke whose business was winding up and he was selling old stock on Gumtree. They were the XM Ocean range brand new with tags and I got the jacket and salopettes for a total of £110. They look and feel great so for that price I couldnt say no, although not yet worn in bad weather. They have Kevlar reinforced bum knees and elbows and many cool features.

I have been thinking about sailing jackets for upper middle aged inshore day sailors such as myself

I seldom sail in the really hearty rough stuff and I have a set of pretty good inherited foulies including salopettes for then but by and large when it turns bad I want to be in harbour or at home.

I spend a lot of time up estuaries and on rivers and I want a jacket that is

1/completely waterproof

2/with a decent warm collar and tucked away inside I want a hood that is warm and has enough of a peak to keep the rain and wind out of my eyes - big enough to go over the thinsulate hat

3/I want the pockets to be warm and deep - with a zip up inner one for wallet and glasses

4/I want it to be a bit long - about the length of one of those screwfix yellow jobs so that I can sometimes get through a shower of rain without having to struggle into the saloppettes - which is a bit of a mission for a big bloke in a small boat

5/I want it to be in the sort of muted colours that would allow me to wear it in town without looking like a street sweeper , French Cat racer or lego parking warden

6/no more than one badge or logo if possible - but I would prefer it to be unadorned - no high vis reflectors or any of that nonsense thanks

we used to wear bridge coats - navy blue outside, red quilted liner- warm as toast and looked okay for around town, walking the dog and also daysailing

- they were pretty good

oh yes... and I would like it to cost under £100

any suggestions chaps or are we into moon on a stick mode here.

Have a look at mountaineering type shops. Generally the goretex jackets are very much lighter with a great hood and just as waterproof as the sailing ones. One difference is the price.
I've just bought a Mountain equipment Karakorum 3 layer goretex for £150 from Outdoor Action. It is a longer fit model and has just got the makers name in very small letters.
I bought it to replace a similar Berghaus model which lasted +20 years.
I do have a Musto Ocean jacket but my knees buckle when I wear it. By the time I get the bottoms on i can nearly crawl up the deck!

GOPR7591.jpgGOPR7591.jpgI walked into an army surplus in Wadebridge, near Padstow, and came out with this little beauty for £60. I crossed the Bristol Channel in a polo shirt and this- two still on the rack, a M and an XXL!
As Fawlty might say... 'don't mention the Hood!'

Because I can't help myself from searching, this seems to be their site: http://www.thebunkerwarehouse.co.uk

I can't find that jacket in their eBay store, but found these alternative suppliers:
