Post number 23 does describe that Ellie purchased the boat from the last owner who himself had purchased her just a year earlier. He'd spent the year of his ownership ensuring the engine was in good condition so hopefully the engine side of things will turn out to be ok.

Hmmm. So he spent a year not being able to afford to launch her. Every advert on ebay tells you how well looked after their boat/car/caravan/horse is. Talk is cheap if you are doing the talking.

Agreed, but your key words are "professionally examined". Aren't there two types of professional opinion:

1. "This engine is good for another 500 hours before it even needs an oil change. What a great buy Mr Duck!!!"

2. "Yeh, I mean for an engine this age it seems fine ...and I mean I can't see anything obviously wrong ...then again it's your toy Mr Duck ...and don't forget that things the old lump might go hiss, grind, crunch when we run her up ...and now that you mention it Piston #2 ....I know a great machine shop up in ...blah blah blah."

I'll bet the opinion was closer to second!

Entirely agree with you - was just pointing out an earlier post which may or may not have relevance! I also do wonder about Ellie herself - is she ill/hospitalised? Seems there are people who know her or possibly who are in vicinity of Brighton Marina, could someone find out whether it's illness or rudeness which prevents her from replying?
 
I wonder if Ellie has approached tv channels like 'Quest'. They may partially fund it and they seem keen on doing films like this.

I don't understand why on earth they, or anyone else would. There is no 'human interest' element, it's not a boat for use by disabled kids or whatever... with the greatest respect and best wishes to Ellie, it's just a tale of someone buying a boat (the easy bit) and then finding that it is bl**dy expensive to own (the hard bit). More research before purchase might have avoided the issue but hey ho, hindsight is a wonderful thing. I genuinely wish her luck but you buy a boat like that then you had better have the finances in place to meet the costs.

The edifice of speculation about hospitals and illness seems based on this blog posting

"As far as I could remember, the only thing I was expecting to turn up at my parents’ address was a letter from the hospital with an appointment to see a specialist. Not very exciting and certainly not warranted of a ‘Look what came in the post!’ email."

which doesn't sound like anything particularly worrying. Lots of people have regular check-ups with lots of specialists for lots of things.

In fact most toys (boats,aircraft,supercars) are easy to buy but upkeep,annual costs,unforeseen problems etc are always way more than the initial purchase cost after a few years. Especially old ones! The only good thing about cars and smaller aircraft is that when your skint they can sit in the garage, a 56' boat costs money just to have it sitting somewhere and still needs looking after. I still don't think getting her launched is that bigger problem.Maybe bite the bullet time.

The Grand Designs TV prog seems to follow this format and gets plenty of viewers? Someone takes on an ambitious project, runs out of money or finds a nasty surprise (although apparently the participants only get a small 'displacement fee' to cover the interruption during filming).

Altruism isn't a prerequisite for a human interest story is it? (the hit count on this thread would suggest not).

so any suggestions for an entirely invented deadline for this project

Grand Designs has already done a boat. It looked quite nice by the end of the programme

I doubt they would be interested in Elizmor, because the houseboat conversion has already been done - and rather nicely, too, by the pictures Ellie posted. In a way it's a shame that the engineering problems aren't greater, because the problem is trivially solvable. A few beneficiary orphans wouldn't go amiss either.
