I don't know what they teach in Digital Marketing 101, but I suspect that it includes "Don't use social networks to knock people on whose cooperation and goodwill you are wholly dependent to solve a self-inflicted problem". Preston Marina could have suffered and may well have suffered significant - and it appears, wholly unjustified - reputational damage from this affair.

Her silence makes me wonder if similar damage has not been inflicted on the other side too. Sad, but a lesson for us all that there are generally no winners in spats on "social media".

Yup. Being perceived, whether correctly or not, as "the person who tried to whip up a social media attack on a company in order to save some money" is probably not great for the ol' prospects. As you say, no one comes out of this sort of thing looking good.

Just spent a good while reading all 41 pages of this thread. It was a bit dissapointing to see the origional poster hasn't been back since the marina gave the other side of the story.Just interested to get the end of the story, its like reading a really good book only to find the last chapter is missing.
Having read the 41 pages , you should have noticed that Ellie does not actually post all that often. Her strategy is to wait until interest dies down a little then stir the pot again. This keeps the thread bumped right up near the top, which suits her purposes for her digital marketing campaign. I wish I had her brains and acumen!

You know? I think that's just a horrible thing to say. You and many others seem to delight in kicking someone when they're down.

To me, she seems so obviously hurt by all the nastiness that this thread has turned into, and then you just can't resist putting a new snide comment, to bump the post back up to the top?

I hope it makes you feel better about yourself anyway.

What a dreadful example of "one sailor helping out another" on this usually friendly forum.

This thread is beginning to feel like bullying with the number of keyboard warriors picking on a single individual.

Some people on this forum seem to think that blogs and youtube views lead to vast riches. In almost all cases they do nothing of the sort. Online ads on a blog of Ellie's audience size would barely cover the hosting. If she's managed to get a few bits of expensive equipment through sponsorship then fair play to her. Don't ask don't get.

Yet again some of the respondents in this thread represent the worst of the forum. I bet all these people worked in ethical jobs to get the money for their boats, and didn't dabble in anything murky like banking or finance.

As mentioned social media is a double edged sword, and since we now have two sides to the story, its absolutely to be expected that there are now two camps regarding the whole thing. If you cant stand the heat you should get out of the kitchen which Ellie seems to have wisely done.

I have no opinion on the OP. However this thread has brought a previously unknown marina to my attention. From what I've read here it seems to be a rather good one. If I ever find myself in that part of the world I'd certainly consider calling in.

So if the YBW forums constitute social media there's a winner here - Preston Marina.

I agree

I don't think anyone has been damaged by the thread - with the soul exception of the occasional YBW ranting loony

Ellie has a project I will follow with interest - and I have been reminded of the importance of having a plan B and C

I now now feel positively about a fender company and anchor company

Preston seems like a very nice marina and I promise that I will call in - probably sometime in 2016

as for the ranting loonies....well how they manage their blood pressure is their own concern

Being perceived, whether correctly or not

That pretty much sums up the modus operandi of modern tabloid journalism ...it has all to do with joining the dots see ... and it works like this (the figurative dots of the case that is and not my patwah dots). All of us like to imagine that we make decisions based upon reason; a process which involves sifting through a formidable, often impossibly, large amount of information. Avoiding information overload requires a system of mental shortcuts whereby we stick a convenient label on most things – “good”, “stupid”, “evil”, and so on.

These labels allow us to “logically conclude” that each so labelled situation/person/company will share the properties we “know” are associated with things that share the same label.

At the start of this thread “we” were implicitly asked to join the dots and conclude that Preston Marina were a bunch of lousers, which we duly did. Then Preston responded with the very modern defence of offering some more dots to join ...which some duly did and came to a different conclusion. In the ensuing confusion fights started to break out left, right and centre ...and a Jack and the Beanstalk thread was born.

Were all of the dots put on public display, the picture would most likely be one of nothing more than some messy launching logistics; no villains, no heroes, just boring old life. But such banality doesn't create interest, raise emotions, or produce so many hits ...hits described as “followers” to potential sponsors!

Here’s my advice to Ellie: Preston Marina’s letter to this forum (reprinted on their website) will almost certainly have been accompanied by a “cease and desist” letter to you. If so, you have been very wise not to challenge it.

What you and Preston need to do now is find a solution to two problems: one logistics and one media – how very 21st century! The good news is that both are of the storm in a teacup variety and both should be open to straightforward solutions which leave you and Preston Marina with your integrities intact. The media solution will be made much easier if you gracefully allow Preston Marina to retain their current position of narrow victors in this little spat ...and a bit of mea culpa will do nothing but burnish your online image amongst "your followers", whilst you serenely slip off into the sunset.

I agree, Preston Marina came out if this rather well in the end. Seem like thoroughly decent can-do sort of people. There were some weird posts from some forumites blaming them, then some weird ones blaming Ellie. I like Preston's summation of the problem - Ellie is young, in a hurry and without much money. I'm not quite old enough to have forgotten what that was like! The actual saga of the ownership and launch of Elizmor has been fascinating and I look forward to following it. I very nearly chose the live aboard life at 27 and living vicariously through Ellie is interesting. I'm glad she posted and it makes sense that she's taken a break from the thread, but like DW says, "what's going to happen next" is heady stuff.

I don't think she was criticising the Marina, just frustrated by the paperwork problems. The marina was responding to the forum kangaroo court.

I've just re-read all of JE's posts and the only 'criticism' of the Marina appears to be the late rendering of a finalised quote for lifting/insurance. I would have been incensed too, but the reason has been explained and I'm sure JE accepts it.
It would be a shame if JE has been 'gagged' because of some members of the forum adding 2 + 2 and making 400.

I don't think she has posted anything since Preston marina responded to the criticisms she made of them, has she?

I didn't read anything Ellie wrote, here or on her blog, as criticism of Preston Marina. Frustration with a very difficult and expensive problem certainly but I read an implied acknowledgement that the Marina were trying to be helpful but coming up against regulatory and insurance issues. Maybe that was my sympathetic imagination.
