I'm sorry, but I feel slightly uneasy about this type of "sponsorship ". I choose to have a boat, which by dint of hard work throughout my adult life, I can afford. I don't expect handouts from anyone.

I think she's smart. And Lewmar are smart. Good publicity, cheaper than an advert. She gives them something, they pay for it. It's the way the world works. And like all the best deals it's win-win.

And i for one don't give a hoot that you are uneasy about it.

The fact of the matter is that a person make a case and a company makes a decision. It's not a one way street sponsorship, no one is forcing anyone to give freely. In the past, I have had diesel tanks, tractors, injectors, valve and head work, all done by companies for free for various reasons, mostly networking. I am currently having fencing installed around my garden at a very good rate because it is prominent and the contractor knows that we are a well known family, so expects his work to get promoted both visually and by word of mouth. If the local contractor had refused my requests for a good price, he would probably have got the job anyway. It's just business.

I am not criticising JE's methods. I'm merely saying that I am uneasy. I'm too straight and old fashioned.:D

Just a thought ....... The hassle with the insurance ,...... has previous owners tried unsuccessfully to launch before ?....... Could this be the reason she has been on the hard for many years ? Is this the reason why she was up for sale ?

That was my thought too.

I am wondering if there might be space available to slide in underneath the vessel one of these special 'U' shaped trailers that have multiple hydraulically adjustable arms for lifting up and supporting Elizmor?
No worries then about pressure on the ground, as the trailer has many tyres for distributing the load.

And they come in big sizes - such as this one - http://www.marinasandtransport.com/...=class_search.pl?property0=Hydraulic Trailers

Trouble is, you would have to try and find a yard not to far away that has something like this.
But if there is one, and space can be made to get it in underneath Elizmor, then she could be taken to somewhere nearby where the ground is more firm, for launching by a conventional crane (?)

At last..............+1

Oh pur-lease. Here we have a (sorry about this Ellie) young and charismatic person with an interesting and unusual story in the middle of doing something great with a historic ship. She has a career in digital media and has runs a number of web pages with very high hit rates. She's already secured a story space in PBO and everyone's realised that for the donation of a few minor items everyone's happy, everyone wins, and the companies get very good publicity.

I don't see anyone complaining when a competitor secures sponsorship to go an race an Open 60 around the world potentially with quite a high chance of dying in the attempt. Or when I have to pay to enter the RTIR in my 27' 42 year old boat (same price as the millionaires of course) and am told in the sailing instructions that I must display advertising for an investment bank on the side of my boat (who incidentally then bombard me with emails on how I might wish to move my non-existant wealth/investment portfolio to them) but at the same time refuse me entry to their little schmoozing bar in the Cowes race village as I'm not important enough.

If the companies involved in the sponsorship of Elizmor didn't see a decent return they'd tell her to, pardon the pun, sling her hook. When I was campaigning 12 and 18 foot skiffs on the race circuit I tried hard for sponsorship, and although I was getting a very good deal from Harken, there were certainly no freebies. These guys obviously see real value in what the Elizmor project can bring to their organisations, and it have to say it's a bit of a no-brainer compared to what they might be paying to exhibit at LIBS/SIBS.

I'd never heard of boat fenders direct, but I now remember the name and if I was in the market for new ones, I'd give them a go, and probably mention the Elizmor story too and see if that got me another 5%.

Well done Ellie!

Morning all - I was expecting discussion to crop up about Elizmor's sponsorship at some point!

I don't really have much to add that hasn't been said already (thanks @Iain C), I certainly don't need to defend my position, and it's great to see that most of you realise the benefit from the sponsors' point of view. I am definitely not expecting 'hand-outs'; sponsorship like this is a two-way partnership, we both get something out of it, and indeed I have had a lot of replies - or none at all - from brands who don't think it is the right opportunity for them at the moment. But for Garmin, Icom, BoatFendersDirect.co.uk and Lewmar - they can see the value in supporting the Elizmor project in return for mentions on my blog and social media pages to my highly targeted readers who also happen to be those brands' perfect target audience.

Digital marketing is my profession, so it's awesome to be able to apply my skills to my own project rather than a client's. I have previously worked at big agencies who would kill to generate good publicity for their clients through a story like this. It works.

Now - back to the launch nightmare - Bajansailor, that seems like a good idea, but we do believe the ground is suitable; she was lifted out there, after all. It's just getting either the marina or the crane company's insurers to sign a bit of paper taking responsibility for it with the evidence we have.

@clyst - One of the reasons the previous owners sold Elizmor to me was because the launch fee was so high - they had a quote around £5,000. So they thought that was enough to warrant selling her... I don't think they knew anything about the added insurance issues, they didn't get that far down the line. Now, I would almost be happy to pay £5,000 just to launch her!

@knuterikt - Yes, I had thought about a floating crane to avoid the need for a ground survey, but I phoned up a company yesterday, and they charge £20,000 a day for the crane plus any relocation fees :S

respect to you ellie, you'll get there - you've got the right attitude to make it work think i'd be right in saying we're all rootin for you and elismor
