My Icom IC -M31 hand held vhf

It turns on. But no transmission or recieve. No when I got it years ago it would not work and someone said about a display that should have an I Or U but I cannot remember any help very happy to receive.

Antenna fully screwed in?

Does the display light up when switched on? Does it look correct? Can you see/change channels, otherwise access any menu?

Is the keypad lock on?

If you turn the volume up and open the squelch (ie turn it all the way down to zero), does the speaker hiss?

Unscrew the antenna, is the little centre pin in the "rubber duck" (antenna) still there?

push the [DIAL] button for 1 second to switch between UK and International channel set, but either will allow you to transmit and receive. What can you see on the display?

The question of I or U relates to the frequency for some channels. Most will be same ie ch 16 so wonkywinch describes well some checks. ol'will

Well back on the boat today , checked all suggestions, fitted spare battery and hey presto , it works . I am not saying its battery as it had display and squelch but it works . So thanks for the help.

Clean the connectors both on the batterys and the set. Quite possibly a bad connection can pass enough current to power up, but not to transmit
