When I first saw Jumbleducks' question I thought ' good point ' - there is, or was, for instance a setup where people doing a parachute jump for their own ' fun ' could get it for free if they raised X amount charity sponsorship, and that was my immediate thought here.
I really don't like these "Trek to Macchu Picchu for Charity X" or "Walk the Great Wall of China for Charity Y" or "Climb Kilimanjaro for Charity Z" stunts, because they all boil down to "Pay for me to have a holiday and I'll give some of the money to charity." That's why I wanted to check the situation in this case. Lots of people are trying to raise money through the Clipper Challenge, and I feel much more kindly disposed towards those of them who are paying the fare themselves and then raising some cash for a good cause.
I hope she raises squillions for the hospice and has a lot of fun.
