My continued tail of woe....volvo penta edc this time

So bought myself a targa 40 last August after finally giving up on my overheating and elderly targa 33 (now fixed running perfectly and on way back to uk! For sale)

Did 50 hours with no problem last season, got rid of the previous mechanic and hired a new one for the new boat - had annual service/antifoul etc - cost a kings ransom as normal and today was to be our first cruise of the new season (in Mallorca so warm and dry!) 2 minutes outside the harbour and the starboard engine alarm went indicating no charge. Stopped the engine, went into the previously pristine engine room to find that 2 belts had shredded - returned to mooring on port engine, called mechanic who replaced all four belts but when the engine was restarted (kad300) it would only go into reverse and then not disengage in neutral but by only by pushing the lever into what should be forward. No error on EDC and fuses all ok on control unit - the gears are engaging ok in control unit but obviously not in the gear box - my mechanic is returning tomorrow to lift the outdrive and take the top off whilst the boat is still in the water which sounds a little drastic - anyone had a similar problem as I can see an expensive long drawn out problem on the horizon....

Could this be as simple as the levers needing to be recalibrated? I've had this on my admittedly evc installation, but I'm sure I've read of similar probs with edc.

There are a few simple checks to carry out before taking the cover off of the outdive.

1) is the neutral LED on the button panel going out when the lever is moved into forward and reverse then coming back on when returning to neutral?

2) try disconnecting the gear cable from the actuator and checking the actuator moves forward and back when the lever is moved.

3) try pulling and pushing the cable with a pair of pliers, if it moves both ways then try it with the engine running (have some one at the helm ready to stop the engine if needed)

This should help you pinpoint your problem.

I have also had the friction bolt in the throttle levers work very loose resulting if play between the lever and the potentiometer but the first check would eliminate this. I have spare throttle levers and actuators in our workshop in santa ponsa if you need to try them. I will PM you my phone number.

We have KAD300's on our Sealine S37 and last year had a very similar problem on the STB engine which was due to a loose connection where the loom enters the control box. Only found out by accident after wriggling the wires after all sorts of attempted cures so have a go at making sure the loom is secured OK. Can't be more specific but hope it does the trick for you.

Thanks for all the advice and a big thank you to Tom and James at Total Marine, Mallorca who provided lots of free and really helpful advice to my local mechanic.

The problem seems to be related to the cone in the out drive which should have been picked up during the service last week - needless to say I am arranging for Total Marine to sort it next week!

Sod's law that I didn't get to use the boat on the only day in my week's holiday that the wind wasn't blowing a gale though....
 
Sounds like neutral on the shift actuator doesn't coincide with neutral on the drive, disconnect cable at drive, cycle gearshift a few times then select neutral and check the spigot on the cable end lines up with the hole on the mechanism on the drive, if not adjust the spigot until they line up. Then you will get equal throw each way which ensures it goes back to neutral and doesn't hang in gear.
If the cable is adjusted correctly then its the cone sticking, this means removing the top gear cluster and checking the cone, worst scenario it may need replacing, as there have been a few problems with drives hanging in gear when its warm after being driven.

As the owner of a T40 in Club De Mar that is looked after by Total Marine ( aka aquatom) I can recommend them. All you eed to find is a place that will lift it for less than about e650 and you are laughing!

I had kad300s on my last boat. We went through belt after belt. Pullies were clean etc but get them to sort that whilst they are at it - it drove me nuts- as did the dust. D6 has one belt. Joy. !

Just for completeness the D6 without compressor has one belt, but D6 with compressor (350, 370 etc) has two.

David's fault was the power supply from the starter motor to the shift actuator, the loose connection which caused the fault was loosing its connection intermittently which in turn lost its neutral position.

Tip for longevity -belts Kad 300
1 - tension correct and recheck every 50 hrs
2 remove the corrosion inside the pulleys
3- wait for it - waxoil the pulleys -daub plenty on , this also grease,s and Lubs the bets -shock / horror.!!
Result no slippage if guinuine parts they friction on the " V" ,no abrasion ,no dust, no shredding
I lost 2x alternator + 1 water pump in the first 2y -all at sea -but changed them - no fun in a chop .
Then figured out the above , not one failure- in last 5 y also manual says " inspect" and change ( from memory) as and when ( - evidence of wear/ craking) -change
Look after it and it will look after you
