I recently sail with someone who has one of these jackets & was struck how ideal it seemed for British summer sailing, but £90 quid????

TK Maxx had some at a much more sensible price, but they were bright orange and I don't want to look like a lollipop, so...

Any suggestions for a reasonably priced alternative?

Maine (Debenhams) thick fleeces are OK but they only sell them in the winter. Musto are expensive but are good quality and last for ages.

I was passing Bicester last week and stuck my nose in - the Musto shop was still expensive compared to the Helly Hansen shop which had some excellent reductions.

This year's shorts and t-shirts are still in pristine condition

They are pretty good except for the knitted cuffs and hem which retain water for a long time.

They used to do a very similar jacket with out the knitting which is more practical but I cant find it on their website.

Mine cost £60 and is 9 years old, has been well used and it still looks pretty good so not too expensive.

On my second Douglas Gill. Seems to be as good but less costly: more often in the sales. Last one was orange (loads of RNLI jibes etc) this one is blue/grey (will I show up if I fall in the 'Oggin?)

I bought one in the Spring. This years version doesn't have the knitted soggy cuffs. Only problem is the lining fabric gets caught in the pocket zip. Otherwise seems ok. Just as well - I shop for clothes reluctantly.

I've had a couple of these jackets and they really do last well. My first one is now 11 years old and still going strong as a (scruffy) winter work coat.
I believe that a hefty component of the eye-watering price is to do with licensing the use of Polartec for the lining.

No suggestions for an alternative to the snugs but I purchased mine at SIBS around 7 or 8 years ago and it is still going strong. Keep thinking about buying a breathable replacement but look at the price and the good condition of the existing one and walk away. The day will come though, possibly this winter if it gets chilly enough !!

csail - I was instructed by SWMBO to get some new oilies earlier this year. After looking at several alternatives I decided on the XM ocean set. I them made the mistake of trying on the Gill Atlantic. It was so much better in terms of fit & comfort that I decided the trousers could wait. It's the most money I've ever spent on an item of clothing and I still get palpitations when I think how much the jacket cost, but it's fantastic - it's light enough to wear when it's wet but not cold, and room enough for a few layers when it is & has kept me dry all "summer". I hope to prevail on the kids for the trousers for Chrismas.

One tip: when looking for oilies, the wearer needs to try them on. A lot of what made the Gill so much better than anything else was the way it fitted my particular godlike* shape.

Richard - It might have been £99 - Once I saw the first 9, I kind of lost interest - my credit card's still walking with a limp from SWMBO's patio /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

SK 700 - TX wotsit at Brent Cross (N London) They had 20 or so L & XL when I went in late July/early August.

NPMR - Thanks for the suggestion - I'll have a nose round for a good price

Any more for any more?

Musto outlet store at Biscester. Often good deals and lots of stock in the back if you ask and cannot fine size. £25 for my deck jacket. £20 for deck trainers. Oilies good as well.

Do not take SWMBO as there are lots of other places to spend lots!! Mine decided to smarten me up so no saving in total but I so scrub up better away from the boat /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I know Musto kit is expensive but my stuff have lasted a long time and I very happy with the cost ratio to life expectancy.

Buy the Snug. I have had 4 over the past 15 years and rarely bother with conventional oilskins. I have a 3 phase rolling programme with the newest one being used for casual wear, one at sea and the oldest in the garden/boatyard. Marine Super Store have them on offer for £74.95.
I think the newer ones are less robust but still are very good. One point to note: the "Medium" size is tiny, the "Large" size is Medium (Chinese sizes I guess) - my latest one had to go back to be replaced. I pointed this out to Musto in a pleasant manner but got no reply.

They are well worth the money, in the family we have several versions. The kids have Musto's, I have a Gill and Wifey has a Henry Lloyd. All of them not cheap, but waterproof, breathable, warm and really easy to wear. Wifey's and mine have lasted over 10 years.

Just because you may find cheaper ones, they may not be better value.

Got mine at TK maxx couple of years ago for £50 it's red by the way. It has the Volvo ocean race logo on it but I dont mind.
