"Must Have" Nautical Android Apps?

Archos

Do you know where I can get Navionics for Archos (runs Froyo 2.2.1). Apps Market is not showing the link for Archos.

As far as apps are concerned Android is Android as long as the app isn't written for a later release and the device has the features the app needs to work.

For Navionics to work properly you need a touch screen and GPS I think. It will work from 1.6 onwards I know so you'll be fine with 2.2

Having written the above there are some apps that are written specifically for certain phones that you may have trouble with, but these aren't normally available in the Market.

Assuming it's the UK you are after this is what you're looking for https://market.android.com/details?id=it.navionics.uKHolland&feature=search_result

Thks for your reply. Yes, it should be compatible, however if you follow the link to buy it, then you get a message saying that "this item is not compatible with your device". Therefore it does not show me the link to pay and load. I have requested Navionics to point me to another source, but no replies yet.

Does the Archos have the Market as an app or are you going through the browser on the device? I purchased from the Market app on my device but it should work via the browser, provided you are using the Archos's browser of course. If it doesn't let you buy from the web have a look in your settings for one called "Allow and install Apps from unknown sources" in you Application setting menu. It may be that the OS thinks the browser is an unknown source as the Market wasn't originally on the web, it was just an app.

Boat Beacon Marine AIS Navigation for Android

Hi,

I wrote and use Boat Beacon - Marine AIS Navigation, based on my own needs sailing in the Bristol Channel. It plots your own boat's position and receives other ship positions via AIS in real time and , unlike other apps, I mean real time, down to the second. I have just completed and released the Android version.

It also provides continuous collision detection out to 30 miles and can share your position too so other Boat Beacon users can see you and if you have an MMSI you can also appear on Global AIS systems like Marine Traffic, ShipFinder, AIS-Hub and Vessel Tracker etc. You can find it in the Play Store or visit the web site boatbeaconapp.com

I have 3 free copies to give away to the first 3 folks who PM me.

I am a bit of a techie so am already (boat hasn't even arrived yet) looking at what apps I could run on my tablet while onboard. I am sure peoples views/recommendations will have changed over the last few years. So what are peoples current favourites? I've already downloaded Navionics. Thanks all.

I use GPS essentials for low power tracking.

If you have data http://sailingalmanac.com/almanachome.html and visitmyharbour have rendered reeds obsolete. (Until you don't have data!)

Marine Traffic is still superb.

Not sure what the anchor alarm of choice is these days. Anyone?

Navionics is my primary nautical application - functionally very good and it integrates with our Raymarine based on-board electronics. Theyr would be good too - if it worked!

Any GRIB app that gives the basic GFS. Great for forward planning – see http://weather.mailasail.com/w/uploads/Franks-Weather/gribexstpp.png. Yes, I know that it is a zyGrib presentation but it shows what the GFS can do. Just use whichever presentation you prefer.

Don’t bother with any app that purports to give detailed or precise forecasts. The term is an oxymoron.

I have been using Weather4D. It lets you superimpose a Meteogram on a chart of winds and move the reference point around. It also lets you get GRIBs by email. That lets you view on other viewers if you wish – eg iNavX.
