My old CD/Radio player is on its last legs I fear. Any recommendations? Cheap & easy to use are prerequisites ;-)

My car radio/stereo died - it wouldn't read CDs any more. I also want cheap & simple. I don't have an iPod and don't plan on getting one, just a phone that plays mp3. It would be good to be able to record 60+ mp3 tracks on a CD and play back on the boat.

One snag with radios on the boat is that they lose their programming when the main breaker is off.
 
If you have the space, a string quartet for romantic sailing can't be beaten, and as back up, a brass band for more rousing stuff

Download a favorable one as a podcast of course!

The ipod docks which I think are being considered (well, my IP600 for example) are normal am/fm radios with ipod docks rather than (or in addition to) a cd or cassette player. I don't *think* anyone is proposing doing away with a radio :-)

In retrospect I wouldn't bother with an ipod dock, just go for a decent quality radio with an aux socket, fabricate some kind of ipod holder and power the ipod using one of those cig lighter - usb power adapters (if you have a convenient socket) or wire in a dedicated usb power socket. This isn't just for skinflint reasons: The user interface on my IP600 is awful: far inferior and less functional than the native ipod user interface. You also have a wider range of remote control options: Raymarine's new e7 offers bluetooth control of ipod touch / iphone and I imagine others will be many others.

I reckon the 3.5mm jack will still be in use long after Apple have changed their ipod interface...
 
when in the states last weekend we bought a new bose soundlink which allows bluetooth transmission of music from any device to the unit which has its own rechargable battery.

we bought it for our kitchen but think it will be perfect for the boat too!

sound quality was very good and no need for wires or anything!

going to try it this weekend on the boat hopefully!
 
Not Cheap but we have a Fusion system which accepts iPhones and iPods, we have speakers down below and some in the cockpit. We have a remote in the cockpit so we can pause if something interesting comes on the VHF, but also enables us to pick tunes without going down below :)

As I said, not cheap, but we like our music

OK if you have connectivity, other wise it's the Grundig Yachtboy.

Plus with VHF extender it connects to my cheap Aldi car radio.

I have both military bands and bagpipe music to cheer up those quiet anchorages.

You like yours? I just hate not being able to play an album once without repeat (having to jump up to hit stop when the first track comes on again), having it play the last thing you played when you switch it on (at the last volume) even if you'd stopped it, and the obfuscated way of getting it to do random play.

In fairness, I understand the former at least is a common "feature" of at least some of the competitors, and I've no complaints about the sound quality.

Mostly I hate the entirely non-existent customer services. Ever tried asking them a question? Following my customer service experience, I'm currently looking at "anything but Fusion" for replacement cockpit speakers.

I'm not too bothered hearing an album more than once TBH, you're right about the random though, but most of the time we play music on random via a playlist or an artist, so don't often listen to just one album. May be because it's not quick to switch off random? :)

The first stereo we got wouldn't tune into the radio so went back via mailspeed, the second one would switch off when I pressed the menu button so I phoned Fusion up. I spoke to someone and they brought the new improved version of the stereo to the London boatshow and just swapped them over there and then. The new stereo has worked perfectly ever since.

So much so that until you mentioned it I'd forgotten the trouble we had at the start.:rolleyes:
 
Jim, before you spend a fortune on a new stereo, I'd try replacing the speakers - I reckon it's them wot's knackered.

As you can get the weather forecasts off your Kindle, I'd suggest getting one of these for entertainment:
