I posted a thread last week about a leak from the anti syphon on my sea water exhaust hoses. On Friday, after a lovely night anchored in a remote bay in the Dilek National Park, I noticed my windlass sounded a bit slow and lazy when retrieving the anchor. Mostly I'm on the flybridge retrieving the anchor so a good distance from the windlass. On this occasion I was using the wired remote at the windlass so I was more conscious of the sound and speed. We moved to a different bay and when we were leaving there it was even more laboured and tripped the breaker. When we got home I asked the mechanic to take a look and he took the whole lot off and brought to his workshop. He says the motor is at the end of its days and recommends replacement. After hours on the phone i found a place in Bodrum with one in stock. €640 and a 5 hour round trip tomorrow morning to collect it.
Also on Friday the sea water pump to one of the toilets packed up. Replacement on order €320.
Yesterday the dyneema strap on my tender davitt snapped inside the winch. No great damage done. When I opened the winch I was surprised how much corrosion had built up on one of the bars across the roller, presumably from seawater dripping on it from the strap. I cleaned it up and did a temporary repair as the dyneema length was nearly twice what was needed. It actually looks as if the strap was rubbing off this corroded bar but it seems impossible from the angle it leads off the roller. I think the current strap is 2.5mm and I'm ordering 3mm as a replacement.20250719_105236.jpg

I'd replace that bar with a stainless one.
I was planning to do so but I couldn't budge the allen bolt holding it on one side even with the winch in a clamp and an extended allen key. I was afraid I'd break it. It cleaned up well with a wire brush and I taped it with waterproof tape. The dyneema shouldn't even touch it so I'll keep an eye on it.

A bit of plastic water pipe cut longitudinal as a sleeve would be a better temporary fix.
I hear what you're saying. However, the tape should mark more easily and it will be easier to see if the dyneema is actually rubbing it. If it is I'll get it vut out and replace with good stainless and a tight fitting rubber sleeve.

That steel bit that’s rusted?
It's not actually rusted. When I cleaned it up with a wire brush and sandpaper the surface is pretty much intact and similar to the other bar. I'm not sure what caused the build up of flakey rust on it. I'm going to leave it open for now so I can see what's actually happening in there.

The rubber sleeve would not be a good idea IMO the cord will cut through it in no time and cause the cord to bunch on the drum.
The cord should never touch that bar, and I'm not sure it ever did. The way the cord leads away from the winch to the first pulley is well away from it - see photo. As I said I'm going to leave the bottom cover off the housing for now so I can see what's happening20250721_141049.jpg
