I have an Icom M801E and connect directly from the headphone socket on the SSB to the mic in on the laptop.
I use to have a Pactor modem but could never get the software, modem and radio all to link up correctly. The advantage I see of having a pactor modem is for seamail but I never opened a seamail account. The only other disadvantage of using the sound card is that you can't let the software control the radio but it's easy enough to tune it manually anyway.
One important thing to note is that in order to receive the weatherfax you'll need to set the frequency to lower than the advertised. Details of which frequencies are on Yachtcoms web site.
A couple of more points to note. The handset must be connected for the headphone out to work. I turn off the ext speaker out. (One of the function keys) and I need the sound turned up to about half way.
