I am not 100% on how to check if there is sufficient oil in my MS2B gearbox.

The user manual has a different dipstick design to mine (pictured) if I don't screw it down (as per manual), it hangs on the pin and measurement would not be precise.

If it is not down/screwed in, then the oil on the minimum level marker, screwed it in is on the upper level marker.

I'm guessing that the dipstick needs to be all the way down, but I will worry about it if I am not 100% sure. I am hoping someone can give me a definitive answer as to which is correct.

Plenty of pictures out there of that type of dipstick in MS2B boxes but cannot find a manual with the instructions relating to it

BUT it is the same fitting as the 110 sail drive for which the instructions are to fully insert the dipstick to the locked position to read the level .......

The second link shows pictures of MS2B boxes with the bayonet type dipstick fitting .... but no instructions !

I thought you could click on an appropriate image (ie bayonet similar to Gary's gear box) to see if the relevant article gave a clue as to maintenance of the gear box or the image was part of a workshop manual. (Of course that could mean clicking on quite a few images but it may be the only way to go)

In general, dipsticks which have to be screwed in are not screwed in to test the level, whereas dipsticks which have to be pushed in are pushed in to test the level.

However, this is not 100% universal so it's one of those apocryphal cases where the exception proves the rule. :ambivalence:
