I have an 9m Beneteau Flyer, should I keep her in Poole or are there nice places to keep her on the water near Tewkesbury/gloucester/Bristol area?? Recommendations required!!

Theres a marina at Tewkesbury boat how much boating you can do without getting feb up from there?????? Plus the area floods a lot. I have not boated around here so can't help you any more.

Gloucester might be a better bet as you can go down to Sharpness and get out on the Severn, but take care it has a terrible tide run and lots of sand banks. depending on your draft it is also possible to sail up the Wye to Tintern with the tide have a pint and sail back down but this would leave you the problem of getting back up the Severn and into the lock. so some tide planning would be needed.

I've only waterskid on these rivers so we didn't bother too much about tide other that giving us enough water to get the boats out on the old Severn ferry slip way, next to the 1st Severn Bridge.

As somebody who lives near to Tewkesbury I can tell you that for part of the year you could keep your boat in the water in your front garden (whether you live by the river or not)!

More sensibly you need to decide between the river (Tewks or Upton on Severn - I wouldn't recommend Gloucester) or the Severn estuary in which case Portishead would be best.

If you still fancy the Solent then Southampton/Portsmouth are about 1 & 3/4 hr drive (on a good run).

What gets me, your location states Poole but your thinking of Tewksbury? WHY???EDIT,just re read, you say your moving to Tewksbury, sorry. Where do you live now, why Tewksbury?yuk :-) I live in Cheltenham just down the road. You've been warned about the floods and it does, with last year being exceptionally bad. Gloucester is a dump and the small marina is not secure from memory. The Bristol channel, and i spent 2years up and down that coast line, is horrid. 2nd most tidal estuary in the world with lovely brown water to boot.
I took my boat to Poole last year, and if i've not sold her before next year, i'll be taking her back. Personally, i'd love to live there also.
Why would you want to use a boat like yours on a river for. After a couple of trips you'd have seen everything your gonna see and be bored. Poole is the place with so much to see and do but the one and only draw back, for me anyway, is the drive. From Cheltenham its 2.5hours on a good day.

Well Ive just been offered a particularly good job there, I dont know the area at all , I don't know about flooding and this is as good a forum as any to start my research.

As Gilly1 says, look at Cheltehnam as somewhere to live, it's much nicer than Tewks. You can live on the motorway side of Chelt (like me) and it's about a 10 min drive to Tewks.

I'd love to live in Poole!

Pete

Cardiff isn't too far, and the bay is nice. Number of places to go increasing, tides obviously dominate the area.
But boating on chocolate brown water isn't the same as clear water. I'd head down the M5 to Dartmouth, with salcombe on your doorstep and the whole of cornwall or guernsey as weekend trips.
Perfect once you get to the boat.......

PM sent Pete but it says you've used your quota so i'm not sure if you'll get it /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif , St.Marks bud, answer to ur question /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

As Pete says, if its not too late, move to Chelt as its lovely here and yes, Tewks is only 10 mins up motorway to next junction. You wont like Tewks mate and they're starting to build to build on flood plains, they wont learn.

Even though i love Chelt, i'd move to Poole in a heartbeat.

Of course,i have no idea where your from and Tewks could be 10 times better than present location. Personally, and i'm sure Pete would back me up,forget Tewks, its not a nice place, hasn't even got a proper hospital.
I imagine the job you've been offered is in or around factory units which dominate the motorway side of Tewks. Your 10 mins from Chelt or Bishops Cleeve, which used to be a small village on outskirts of Chelt but is now a small town, but its ok with a couple of schools if you have kids.
House prices in Tewks are cheaper though which has to be considered, probably because the place floods from time to time and its a dump /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
When you go there and drive around the place, you'll find new houses on embankments and ares of low lying land which floods.Well thats where they're building even more houses.
House next door to me is for sale, 2 beds thou.
I'm sure you'll be fine whatever the outcome.

yes new job is right alongside the motorway at Tewks. I live in poole , girlfriend lives in Surrey, you can see the problem may be move the boat to the thames is the answer but my twin Vilevos would soon glaze up in speed limited traffic.

Well, looking at the rain currently falling in central Wales where I used to have a farm, I would expect Tewksbury to flood in about 8 to 10 days just like last time.

I wonder what sort of anchor you will need to hold fast in a garden or down the local High Street with 3 or 4 knots running? /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Agree with others that Tewkesbury is not the nicest place to live when Cheltenham, the Cotswolds and S.Warwickshire are close at hand.

I don't think your boat would appreciate being kept on the Severn or Avon.

I also think that the R.Exe could be a good place to keep it - less than 2 hrs from Tewkesbury to Topsham. You can then play about in the estuary or shoot off to the lovely harbours of Devon and Cornwall.

We live in Stratford and keep the boat at Kingsbridge (Salcombe Estuary). Normally takes 3 hrs driving, Dartmouth would be similar, Brixham slightly less.

we had a season on the severn and did the whole area - Sharpness, Gloucester Tewkesbury upton stourport etc. it was enjoyable but we got bored very quickly, just not enough choice. have also been based in Poole and would stay there if I were you, or at least leave the boat there.

Bristol is great but the tidal window is small.
Portishead gives more flxibility.
Cardiff is fab!
Don't forget the M5 south on a summer Friday evening can be a bit of a sod!

keep my boat in upton marine 20 mins from home six hours to sea gate [image]http://

i grew up on the avon riverbank in evesham which is about 15 mins drive from tewks, and i moved to poole 15odd years ago.
i've got to say no job would tempt be back to live there permanently, people in poole dont realise how lucky they are.
tewksbury is not that great but its central to cheltenham and worcester and there are some nice villages around bredon etc
it it were me i would keep a weekend base in poole with thte boat and rent somewhere near the job and try it for 6 months
i do evesham to poole in 2h15min regularly
good luck

You have got to tell me the route from Evesham to Poole that only takes 2hrs 15mins /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
My very best time from Poole to Cheltenham at night was 2hrs 15mins. How do you do it /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif and what do you drive :-)
