All,

I know a few people have tried this and many have failed, but others must have succeeded and enjoyed.

I have been giving some serious thought to moving to Spain with the Mrs for a year or two, possibly longer if it worked well. We have a family home just outside Puerto Banus that is empty for most of the year so it wouldn't be that hard a process!

The hard part is finding work (I guess) I would ideally like to get away from IT for a while and enjoy my passion of boating as my work. What opportunities are there for me to consider? Charter work springs to mind and I would be happy to put myself through all the required training, but what are the chances of work and what can be earn't doing it? Anyone done it/doing it?, any ideas or good points of reference to help me evaluate the options?

Many Thanks

Nick.

Maybe a good idea to speak to Suncoast who contributes to this forum as he's done something similar recently

HI Nick

My parents live in Spain, not too far from you if my geography of Spain serves me well, a small village between Murcia and Cartagena.

I would have thought your prospects would be very good especially if you target the UK tourist areas.

I've looked several times for a boat+skipper, preferably english speaking, that would take me out fishing and so far I have only found 1. As an idea he has a 23ft boat and charges 240euros for 8 hours - not bad money. Moorings are quite cheap I recall him saying about £1000 a year for that boat.

Hope this helps, good luck
Matt

Hi Nick
I have a boat in Campormar ( Nr Torreveija) and stay on it 1 week in every month.
I get a constant stream of people wanting to go fishing, out for the day, ect If I
wanted to make a business out of it it would not be to difficult to get a living, I sometimes take a few people out for the day if I like the look of them ( expenses only of course) mooring is approx 1500 euros per year for my boat 31' inc shore power & water. If you are looking Porta Banus way you can double or even treble
this I looked at a Sealine Statesman 305 Sedan in Benalmadna the mooring was
3000 euros per year + water & shore power & unless yoy buy through a broker
you are unlikly to get a mooring as they all quote 3 year waiting lists ect
So as you can see it varies somewhat. I did quite a bit of research into all this & would be willing to share it with you if you so require.
.....all the best Nat

The cost of berths in Spain looks fantastically cheap when you compare to our Winderemere costs of £2500 + shore power per year for 26' berth.

Me thinks I will retire to Spain earlier than I planned.

Yes Ian. You can get out all the year round, it makes boating much more enjoyable
At half the price, everything is half the price if you take the time to look.

See you out there.......................Nat

Come on Ian you know it makes sense, wonder if we can share a transporter down to Southampton?

I was up at the boat on Saturday (I actually popped aroun to see you but you were not there) - It was wet, cold and miserable. Just think of the sunshine :)

Re: Half Price????

My brother has been cruising the Med for the last four years now in his Yacht.

Its true that perhaps food and drink are cheaper, but moorings are very expensive particularly in the summer months. He says £60. a night is quite normal! There are other problems too! if the boat needs lifting they dont allow you to work on it at all. They insist that they do the work, and of course its an arm and a leg when you get the bill! Fuel is far more expensive than here if you are using diesel (gas oil) and they are very sensitive about the British working out there! Big fines if you are caught, and believe me you will be because the locals will soon dob you in to the authorities!

I know we Brits always like to think the grass is greener on the other side! but take care and look carefully before taking the plunge! I might add that I also want to cruise the Med, but I waiting until I can afford to go without having to earn a living there!

Best of Luck

Barry

Re: Half Price????

Hello Barry
I agree with you about some of the high mooring charges, Portals is very expensive in the summer as are all the others around the Balerics. but if you shop around there are much cheaper moorings to be found also many sandy beaces you can anchor off & tender in, cost nothing (plenty of bars & resteraunts along them). As for repairs ect I recently had a lift out & new fishfinder & transponder fitted total lift out & labour was 100 euros (Campormor) I did not think this was expensive compared to a chage of £100 for a lift out only + another £100 to lift back in on a 28' boat my friend had to pay in Gallions Reach in Nth Woolwich now
thats an arm & a leg. If you get a problem in a expensive marina its part of the joys of boating. None of us like it but have to suffer it, but if you have prior warning there are some smaller marinas in Spain that are very reasonable, you have just got to find them.
