Hey Guys!
Just a quick introduction first!
My names Rob, i own an Azimut 46e berthed in Southampton.
Now Southampton is great but Britian isn't. I am seriously considering moving her to Palma, Mallorca.
Has anyone done this? if so can you suggest the cheapest, but reliable method of getting her over there.
I have establish that its going to cost between £8,000 to £10,000 to move her over.

I have also had a quote for £7000 to move her by road.
Is moving her by sea a worth while option?

Would appreciate any answer

But then you have the added costs of taking the radar arch, lift outs/in etc.
Do you know how much travel by sea, as in sticking it on the back of a tanker.
 
As a gestimate probably the thick end of £10k min as deck cargo but don't forget unless you want a very black and sooted up boat if the wind is wrong direction and that orrible black heavy oil soots goes everywhere she will need shrink wrapping if possible which may mean taking certain bits off. Majority of people will use road transport and for you I guess somewhere around Barcelona and sail accross although I think there is a Ro Ro that will take the tractor / trailer unit but quite expensive that last bit so most plop her in as near as possible and then on her own bottom.
 
We looked at the reverse trip - The best quote we had was from Transboat, who do regular trips. The best option is truck to Port Ginesta, then by sea to Palma, which is a reasonably easy trip (so I am told!) We were quoted 8K all in from Port Ginesta to Liverpool for our Phantom 38, but as rightly pointed out, would have paid the extra for shrink wrap, and dont forget the arch, rudders and propellors have to come off and be refitted.

They will also pick up from Barcelona, but I understand there are some height issues leaving the marina. Also Villa Nova el Geltru (sorry about spelling) was another option - around 5 hours from Alcudia.

You can truck direct to Palma, but the ferry is very expensive for a large load.

We also got costs for ship delivery, but was a lot more expensive and depended on weather and other loads.

The final thing is to ring the local dealer in Palma, and ask them if they have a load going back, that you can come down on, that could work as well.

Hi from Mallorca,
We escaped / shipped out in March from Hull To Port Ginesta (Barcelona). Truck sailed on ferry to genoa to avoid France. We are 10m with 4.2m out of water. There are issues with your size of boat for the journey which do need some research and may prove prohibitive / difficult to the road option.
We then sailed Ginesta to Port Andraixt which was character building as its a lonely 125 miles with very unpredictable weather forecasts - we had three good reports for our passage !

I bought an Aquastar 48 last year in Gibraltar and i looked at moving her by sea to Guernsey, road was out as she was too high.

I did not have the time.

I wanted to go through her completely at home in Guernsey and when I did I had mechanical and electrical issues.

Fuel would have cost at the time about £7k and I reckon incidental expenses about another two.

I had her shipped by Peters and May to Southampton with no problems at all £10k including insurance.

Unless you have the time it is probably cheaper to ship it.

The risk is you have a mechanical problem or a bout of bad weather for a couple of weeks and you get holed up in some hell hole.

If you are retired, have the time and welcome the trip take the boat on her own bottom.

I have some quotes from a couple of transport firms in and around Southampton that can accomodate for a vessel of our size. So theres obviously no problem with height issues.
Just out of curiosity, how do the haulage companies get her across the channel?

I have contacted Peters & May and am waiting a responce at the moment.

By the sounds of what you guys are saying, there really isn't much difference between Trucking her there (what with lifts, removing radar arch etc) and shipping her.

I have heard that the best way to get a berth over there is to avoid agents etc. Also if i were to purchase a berth do they hold there value.

Berths are difficult to get - Deleted User I am sure will be on here soon, he has a mooring in Palma, so may have some contacts for you. Medreamer has a mooring in Alcudia, so may also be able to help.

The other thing to consider is some of the less busy places such as Cala Dor - or talk to the local Azimut dealer in Palma and see if they can help. If they think they can get your ongoing buisiness for servicing etc, then they will help (normally) as much as they can.

It took me 3 years to get an annual mooring i could rent, and its just a case of keep knocking on the doors of the marina, and any contacts you can get. An Agent is likely to charge you a premium, but sometimes its the best way to go.

As far as purchase goes, I am not sure how much they will appreciate, a lot of the Med moorings are fixed lease, and many of them are coming towards the end of their term, so ther may be some bargains around.

About a year ago on this forum someone commented on the savings by taking a boat to France then using a French boat transport company to take it down to the French Med. The search engine used on this forum is poor so you are unlikely to find the original posting but this might just prompt someone with a memory.
 
I know PaulineB & MrB, had their 48' riva trucked to france, then brought her to Barcelona, maybe a quick PM to her might bring some resuklts, that was from Brighton. I dont remember them taking props and rudders off??
 
Nine years ago, I took a Camargue 47 from Hamble to Majorca. I looked at shipping and at taking her there by sea, but road was bay far the cheapest and best option.

I motored across to Cherbourg, got her trucked to Saint Cyprien, pottered along the coast to Barcelona, and then crossed to Majorca. It was easy, quick and enjoyable. I hired a car in Cherbourg and met the boat in Saint Cyprien one and a half days later. I used these people:

They arranged the lifting on to the truck at Cherbourg and off at Saint Cyprien. They were extemely helpful and efficient. Nothing had to be removed from the boat (props, radar arch, etc).

In those days it cost about £2500. It would have been less if I had contacted them directly, instead of through an agent. The son of the owner, Guillaume, was one of the drivers. First class service.
 
Nice boat, the AZ46. I had one before my existing boat. I'm moored in Palma currently but we bought our Ferretti 46 from Lengers in Holland. We investigated the best/cheapest way of getting the boat to the Med and were advised by Lengers to use Van de Wetering who shipped it to Port Napoleon in the south of France. They had to dismantle the radar arch and some of the flybridge furniture and put it back when it arrived in SoF. This sounds bad but actually it was about a day's job at either end and the people who did it seemed to do it all the time. Total cost in 2005 approx €9000 (Euros). We then played with the boat in SoF for a few weeks before getting a delivery skipper to take her to Palma
As already commented, you will not find it easy to find a mooring for rent in Palma or indeed anywhere else in SW Majorca although you will be able to buy a mooring if you are so inclined. You will be very lucky to find a mooring by simply phoning up and asking. Your best bet is to tramp around to the marina offices and beg but that will still probably get you nowhere. You might have more of a chance in Cala D'Or or Alcudia. I have a contact in Alcudia who might be able to help. Just to show you how hit and miss this can be, we got our mooring in Palma by accident. We pitched up in Club de Mar, Palma from Denia on the mainland in Oct 2004 in our AZ46 to stay for a week's holiday which they agreed to. We asked to stay for a few more weeks which they also agreed to and then we sort of stayed for good although we've moved berths several times. Basically, we pay our mooring fees on time and schmooz the office staff occasionally but I expect to be chucked out eventually. There is no security of tenure with a rented mooring in the Med

Brought a Sealine 420 back from Cadiz to Hamble Point by road two years ago, all in cost including everything backload insurance radar arch lowering etc was about £6000 with Global and MDL outlook discount. They were fine and liased with us all the way. Guess it would be similar going the other way and excluding inflationery pressure a bit cheaper as Barca nearer than Cadiz.

I sent my Sealine down from Southampton to Palma on the back of a boat back a few years back. Pricing was around the same for road or sea - I had no problems and it was an experience meeting the ship in Palma and being winched off in the harbour. I went with Peters & May. I would not hesitate in doing it again and would recomend both the method and agents used.

I would also go direct for berthing, I'm in Cala d'Or but would not generally use a agent unless thet can get you what you can't get direct.

To add to my previous post, the year before, I had brought the Camargue back from SoF to Hamble via Sunseeker, Poole. I used Bugler, who were more expensive, removed the props and rudders and radar, etc. and mounted the boat backwards on the truck.

Sunseeker managed to damage it getting it off and everything they did except refitting the props and rudders was done unsatisfactorily.

Expensive and not pleasing lesson.
