Hello to all,
i'm ready to move to inboard after my first 4 years of Antares 8.80 with 2 x 150 hp verado engine. I began boating in 2014 when i bought new this boat from Beneteau Turkey. Kids are getting older and we begin to miss place in the boat. They are 5 berth on it, 2 in the "cave" (aft cabin) (like we use to call that place), 2 in the front (front cabin) and one convertible in the main living place.

We don't want to buy a new boat again as we had some issued by buying new and of course we want to spend a controled budget .
So we are looking for a 40 feet motoryacht with a maximum of 200 000 €. We decide to spot some model like GT38 and of course Monte Carlo 42 which have the ability to convert to crewed charter boat, which is one of our goal that we plan to do in Greece.

Like you understand my knowlegde for inboard boat is very weak, i'm learning day by day and i was wondering that you can teach me some important points not to forget while buying a boat like that, principaly for motor checking and for the rest (like hull). I agree that my buy will be control by an expert who (i hope) will help me to choose the cleanest boat.

I'm already alert about some expensive maintenance on Volvo Penta (for MC42 2x370) like "heat exchanger" which have to be checked depend of the hours of the motors.

If you have more tips, can you share it here ? Thanks a lot.

we are not planning charter for a rentability in order to get a salary, it's more for fun and the pleasure of sharing. If i rent 30 days/year it's enough for me.
I don't need training for piloting but more engine training maybe like you advice. I never heard that kind of training anywhere, maybe it exist in Great Britain, but here in Belgium and in Greece, never heard about it.

Whatever you do don't buy an IPS boat...they will burst into flames and kill you!

Don't buy an out drive boat as it will self destruct forcing you to sell your house to pay for repairs!

And don't buy a shaft drive boat and the extra fuel burn will mean spending the kids inheritance!

I'll just leave that there!

Life is a compromise.

Shaft boats are simple. The engines are ( usually ) more forward giving less cabin space. Most boats 45ft plus will prob be on shafts.

Outdrives ( half an outboard sticking out the back of he boat ) have the engine further back so more cabin space. As the props are further back they are a little less responsive when manuvering at low speed but can be turned making them into useful stern thrusters. They use less fuel but do require bellows etc every 2 years. Lots of people hate them but I never had any issues

ips is very clever but anecdotally ( only anecdotally as we have never had anyone on here with real life issues ) will cost a fortune if it goes wrong. Simple to drive and again the engine are well back in the hull

Any engine needs heat exchanger cleaning etc and if what you are buying is relatively recent I am not aware any Volvo engine has particularly more issues than another.

thank for replies

@sailorsam : you advice a rowing boat :-) :-) :-)
@jrudge : what i can se for now, i received proposing for boats between 2008-2011 with 300-700 hours with 2xD4-300 or 2xD6-370 they are outdrives

I had a targa 40 with d6 outdrives

The sterring rams were on the outside and used to fail every 2 years. There are some refurb ones for sale - I don’t know if the issue was ever fixed by Volvo. I do recall they had an enhanced ram but it was as bad as the last.

Buy the boat based on what you need / like. Unless the survey shows something terrible I would not be overly concerned as to the power package as long as it is main stream and maintainable ( which what you refer to is ).

Othersmay differ in their view but you spend time on the boat and not looking at the engjnes. Nothing on a boat is immune from going wrong or needing maintenance.

Go straight to shaft drive .
Buying an aged outdrives will mean refunding deposits and poor “trip advisor “ esq posts - if so your business plan will go the way of the dinosaurs.
In year 2 will soon realise why .

It needs to be sexy and desirable, and importantly go on the button every time .
Pershing , Baia , Itama , Otam , Sunseeker Camargue44/ 50 et al .
Flash them fast to a nice bay and back with plenty of selfie worthy posting opportunities and it’s £££ kerching plan .

In-between the punter cash cow , enjoy it yourself.

Here’s an example of a successful modal - copy - role it out - simples

they look very familiar brand to you, but they sound very exotic to me :-) Sorry it's a fact that as a french speaker i'm closer to french brand. I agree that these brand like Sunseeker or Pershing are more prestigious brand, but to enter my budget i must purchase 2001-2002 boat which seem very old to me

Can't help on boat choice, although your choice will be limited depending on where you buy - and particularly in Greece will probably be very limited as it is much more orientated towards sailing boats.

You mention doing charters, but I think you will find this very difficult to do in Greece as they are very strict on licences which require qualifications. This year they are having an extra purge on illegal chartering and there are many reports (including some quoted in the Liveaboard forum) of heavy fines and impounding boats.

It would be wise even if you keep to private use to gain recognised certification such as the ICC as you will need to buy a DEKPA before you use the boat and they normally ask for skipper's qualification along with other boat documents before issuing the permit.

nice boat i love Nimbus but the probabilty to find used one and to bring to Greece is very short, and deck plan is a little "oldy"
I mean that i try to find a boat not too far from Greece, Turkish market is the closest foreign market, i have no contact on Croatian market. So it can be french market but boat will be bring by road.

Road transport is difficult to Greece. The normal route is road to slovenia and then sail down to Greece. That is how my boat was delivered from Germany.

you will find a much better choice of suitable boats in Croatia and particularly Italy.

Since i launch this post also on other forum, i gatered a lot of reactions around all forums.
Most of them where around Volvo Penta D4/D6 which, if i read reaction, is the worst motor to have in marine diesel !
I know also that internet or forum exchange are only a small part of the boat users/owners.
Yacht forum talk about reability problem on steering cylinder, (which volvo change in ?? 2012 ?) other talked about motor himself.
On outboard forum of course, advice are to buy a MF1095 or NC33 outboard version, which are not my target, i need space

So if you were me, close to buy a second hand 40 feet cruiser, what will be your reaction ?

i already examine these exotic brand for me. They are prestigious and for my budget around 200.000€ i can touch a boat from 1999 (too old) or brand like Itama are not the kin of boat that i'm looking for.
I need the maximum of shadow, open boat are not for me.

You mention thinking about a Beneteau Flyer GT38 .... they are very noisy at anything over 10 knots … the superchargers and turbos make so much din everybody has to shout at each other! No insulation in the engine room at all. Also the engines and drive-legs are very expensive to service, although this would apply to anything.
