Having been based in the Solent for the last 20 plus years with the exception of a couple of years elsewhere we are thinking of trying our luck eastward

We were planning to move the boat to Spain but discovered it was a darn sight cheaper to rent a villa long term there:confused::eek:

So now we need to find a safe, comfortable and most of all cheap mooring for our beloved boat a Trader 44.

We visit the boat about 10 times a year but the family (3 young grand children) use it for breaks

We are looking at Brundall Bay Marina, Norwich as a base to provide peace and security for us and somewhere interesting for the family to stay.

What does the panel think?

Hello,

We moor on the river Yare, a little closer to Norwich than Brundall. I am very willing to help with local knowledge.

Regards, Paul

Thank you:D

I e mailed the Marina over the weekend but it seems they are quite busy and will let me know nearer the time if they can fit us in which sort of knackers my forward planning:confused:

Hi Paul

Thank you very much for the information

As soon as time allows we will drive down and check out the marinas you suggest as well as a couple of others

The Broads is a fabulous place to moor and cruise. We had several very happy seasons there, although moored at Acle on the Bure. I guess your boat is too large to go through the Yarmouth bridges though.

Best fish and chips in the world at Potter Heigham.

Definitely don't try and take your Trader through that bridge though :D

When Kim first saw Seadweller he said she looked like a block of flats:D

We are planning to have some work done on her in Fox's Yard - copperbottoming etc

After a copious amount of champagne on Mothers Day it seemed like a good plan to then find a mooring for her Eastward - saving money was also a big factor

That was before I took bridge heights into consideration. My thought was if they got Brooms in and out then we would be OK:o

As soon as he can find the time His Lordship will sit down and work out what is feasible

Hi,

If you plan to visit after Easter, I can show you some moorings by River. I wil PM my mobile number for when you visit.

Goodchild Marine is in my opinion the best equipped and run Marina on the Broads System and outside the toll area if you intend you need a safe place to moor your boat while away, with good access to the sea being based on the end of Breydon Water.

It has full security floating pontoons and run by very nice people who as Marine Engineers know a thing or two about boats.

It is not a big marina and therefore does not have a huge turn over of berth holders but well worth checking.

As a previous berth holder I can thoroughly recommend Goodchild Marine.

South is fine for your boat, the bridges almost as far as Norwich all open and there is a lot of deep water with secluded moorings along with plenty of pubs.

Brundal Bay is expensive for the broads but dirt cheap for the South Coast and it is on one of the nicest stretches of river but it is a fair old treck to the sea from there, will take you in the region of 4-5 hours.

There is quite a nice marina on the Waveney, not too far from Oulton Broad, therefore accessible for the sea. Nice facilities inc liesure club, bar and food. Can't remember the name but you will find it with a Google.

Hope you don't mind me piggy-backing this thread but can anyone point me to where I can get info on bridge heights on the Broads? We have left our beloved in Holland & Belgium for a while now, travelling across 8-10 times a year, but I have also been smitten with the Broads since childhood (the first time round, that is) when let loose on my first boat - only a heavy wood clinker rowing boat, but what joy when only 12 years old!
Anyway,it would be good to be able to pootle across and, subject to safe mooring availability,be able to leave our boat in a beautiful part of England for a change.
By the way,if anyone wants any heads-up on Holland or northern Belgium,I'm happy to help wherever possible.

Think you are talking about WRC, good facilities but not big enough for a trader and not enough water in the private basin either.

Sea side of the lock there is RNSYC and two Haven marinas, one in the old docks are called Hamilton Dock and another just before Mutford lock, access to the Broads, called Lowestoft Haven.

Once through you have the Yacht Station that do have some long term berths on the floating pontoons but you would be susceptible to hire boat damage.

There is another small marina at the other end of Oulton broad but there is from memory nothing big enough for you.

Nothing up the Waveney on the way too Beccles but followed round there towards the New cut there is Crown Cruisers and then St Olaves Up th Cut there is Reedham but you could only go on the outside on the river.
Cut back towards Yarmouth and there is Goodchilds and Burgh Castle, would recommend the first but not the second.

Other way from Reedham takes you up towards all the Marinas at Brundall, Brundall ay is the big one but there are quite a few little yards that would have a mooring big enough for your boat.

Online editition of the Broadcaster, mainly for holidaymakers to the Broads but with plenty of information for newcomers : - HERE

Page 22 gives a map (of sorts) showing the Broads & bridges, free moorings etc. Tide tables, bridge heights and lots more ...
