Our home port is where Plas Menai and two other sail training companies are based.
I am totally biased having sailed this area for over 50 years! There is no better base in the North West.
I would contact Caernarfon Harbour Trust about keeping your boat south off the Bridges. If it is bilge keel the River Seiont at Caernarfon is best suited.
This is a superb training ground for any sailor.
A typical short Day sail can be to take the flood tide from Caernarfon to the Bridges. Once shown the way you will get confident to do continue through to Beaumaris .
A longer day sail in time but not distance is easy just take the Ebb to Fort Belan and then try sailing back against it! Anchoring at Abermenai is a skill to be developed.
Longer day sailing or weekend passage making usually ends up anchoring off somewhere sheltered around the Island. Pub/restaurants are conveniently located at all popular stop overs Porth Dinllaen, Rhoscolyn, Treaddur, Holyhead, Cemaes, Amlwch, Moelfre, Red Wharf Bay, Conwy, Beamaris, Menai Bridge, Y Felinheli and Caernarfon.
Joining in beach BBQs at other anchorages is popular with all ages.
There are three main clubs in the area that now offer supported cruise in company both around the Island and to other Irish Sea destinations.
Again I am totally biased as the RWYC in Caernarfon has the best bar in the oldest yacht club building in the world and has a very active and experienced cruising in company group.
We share much our experience and local knowledge of tides etc with all. We do this on an individual basis with members but also on the face book closed group Sailing and Cruising Wales which you should join.
If you are coming to Felinheli dock give me a PM and I can arrange a meet and pass on more info.
You will definitely be more "qualified" than me by the time you have your dazed kipper from Plas Menai!
It is often quoted that Nelson stated if you can safely circumnavigate Angelsey you can sail anywhere in the world.
That will probably include the River Ribble!
Steve.
