We have finally decided to move from Cobb's Quay and now have the boat at Torquay Marina.

Does anyone have any suggestions for nice beaches or bays for anchoring or day trips?

Summer Cruise 2013 - Book Now!
Want to visit different ports and expand your cruising experience...
Dont delay, contact us today to secure your place on our Summer Cruise to the West Country 2013. Please see the latest details of the itinerary below.
The Mendez Marine team will be along to help in all sorts of ways – general support, helping with electronic navigation skills on your boat, radar use etc, so expect to see some familiar faces. The cruise is open to all craft over 28ft in length with a safe range of 100 miles, we supply all the course notes and chartlets, and arrange all the berthing with the marinas at a discounted rate.
The planned itinerary includes mostly short passages with lunch stops, so that we can take in the best of the West Country’s scenery.
Date Day Passage Overnight
26th May Sunday Start Torquay Torquay
27th May Monday Passage to Salcombe Approx 20 miles Salcombe
No shore power.
28th May Tuesday Passage to River Yealm for lunch stop. Approx. 20 miles before lunch 8 after. Plymouth
29th May Wednesday Explore upper reaches of Plymouth by smaller boats and the River Tamar by dinghy. Plymouth
30th May Thursday Passage to Polperro for lunch at anchor / mooring buoys. Approx. 18 miles before lunch 7 after Fowey
No shore power.
31st May Friday Passage to Torquay Approx. 55 miles Torquay
To assist you in getting your boat down to the start in Torquay MDL marina we are running a feeder weekend on the 18th / 19th of May, on one of these days, weather permitting we will run an accompanied trip with those who wish to get their boat to the West Country ahead of the crowd and without pressure so that there is no rush on the 25th of May. There is no additional charge for this other than a joint shared return car hire.
If you have completed and returned your booking form and payment - thank you, if not and you want to go, can you please return it as soon as possible together with your deposit, as places are rather limited due to the delightful but small marinas and harbours that we are visiting.
If you have any questions or queries then please call or email us.
To book click here fill in the form, which can be done online, then email it back to us.
Kind regards
Jon and the Team

Jon is an excellent instructor with patience and very good interpersonal skills which really put us all at ease and made the course very enjoyable. I would have no hesitation in recommending Jon to others in the future and we are looking forward to attending the VHF license course. – Glynis

Hi Stu,

We have a (new to us) Fairline Targa 30 that we are keeping in Torquay from this year. Just waiting for the weather to improve so we can get the refurb work we are having done finished and bring her around from Plymouth in between work.

We have had a smaller boat on the Teign for the last 3 years, we have enjoyed exploring as far as we could go given our then short range - the Dart is a good destination. The Teign is worth a look and has a visitor pontoon (you will need a dinghy) but avoid in an easterly and stick to the channel. The Exe has a floating cafe off Starcross. We hope to go a lot further this year. I am sure others will be along with more ideas shortly, lots to do!

See you shortly!

Cheers,
Brett

Welcome to the English Riviera - nice provided there is no Easterly wind, and we have had one of those for days on end now.

We have a berth at MDL Torquay, but are 'between boats' at the moment, new one should be here soon if the weather can warm up enough to get her copper-coated.

There are some nice coves around the bay. Trips up the Dart and Exe are very enjoyable, and there is a floating cafe on the Exe which serves very good food.

Further afield there is Salcombe, although we have not been there yet.

We also enjoy just drifitng off Maidencome/Watcombe having a nice lunch and doing a spot of fishing.

Sounds like fun if we could find the time and grow 4 feet!!

Thanks for the ideas, and hopefully meet up soon when you move the boat

We were down last weekend and ventured out to experience the easterly! Maidencombe sounds like a cracking idea, SWMBO spent many holidays at Sladnor as a child just above the beach.

Hi Stu & welcome to the English Riviera, were based across the bay in Brixham.

If you just fancy a quick blat out in good weather head across the bay to Fishcombe, a delightful little bay with a cafe on one beach and another suitable for picnics or a BBQ.

If you fancy something a little more refined head up the dart to Dittosham and pick up a visitors bouy for a night in the Ferry Boat Inn

Alternatively head over to Brixham for some great pubs and restaurants.

Regards

Andy & Alison

We have finally decided to move from Cobb's Quay and now have the boat at Torquay Marina.

Hi Stu,

We also live very near Bath and have our boat at Cobbs Quay and have been trying to get across to that area for a floating holiday for the last two holidays (Last Automn and this Easter) and have been blown off on each occasion.

Would love to hear how you get on over there. Presumably you are in the MDL marina over there?

Cheers,
Andrew

Hi Crossy

Yes we are in the MDL Marina, a bit sorry to leave Cobbs but we became fed up with trek through the bridges and we all lave Devon so looking forward to exploring the area

Round the corner to Babbacombe Bay. Drop anchor and possibly enjoy a bite to eat at the Cary Arms.

Just before that there is another little Bay where you could drop anchor and take a walk to the Palace Hotel. A classic English Hotel with the most Grand of public spaces and lovely gardens. If you see Bertie tell him Henry says hello !

Continuing past past Babbacombe Bay drop into Teignmouth. Stay overnight on their small pontoon. Memories of a childhood past at the amusement arcade on the pier where they have all the games you remember as a kid.

Heading the other way Brixham is a must and just across the bay. Beyond that Dartmouth, worthy of several days exploring including Dittisham upstream. Dinner at the Ferry Boat Inn whilst tied to one of the moorings is a must. Time the tide and pop into the Sharpham vineyard.

Salcombe is wonderful. The perfect summer day.

The river Yealm is tucked away. You have to negotiate an entrance which screams out as being totally wrong but trust the charts and associated passage notes. Discover what a Voss is and use one to cross over for dinner at the Ship Inn.

You have rich pickings there. Enjoy :)

Yes Teignmouth is a little visited gem, there are now 2 visitors pontoons so plenty of space. Just before Babbacombe there's also Ansteys Cove, a great place for a sheltered night unless there's any East in the forecast. And there's the Exe, my home stomping ground, with the recently opened River Exe Cafe, good food and beer, the Turf Locks Hotel and then Topsham with one of the best pubs you'll ever come across, the Bridge Inn.

And I'm writing this whilst sat on my boat in the Dart, you could spend days here and not get bored. And just past Salcombe there's Hope Cove and Burgh Island. We are blessed with choice, you will enjoy your time here!

Like several other posters here, we also live outside Bath, and kept our Nimbus at CQ for around six years, but have brought it down to Torbay - Brixham;)
Downsides are the extra drive distance, but an upside being no fee like we used to have to pay to PHC:p
Likewise no liftout as at Cobbs - damn nuisance that!

Past few months wished we'd been berthed your side of the bay. The easterlies we've been plagued with in Brixham have played havoc with our lines, reckon would have been far more sheltered your side. Bit open to the east in CQ I know, but surely not as bad as it has been in Brixham?

Hi Stu,
Welcome to the area. I think all the best spots have been covered. One of my favorites is going up the Dart to Totnes. You can stay at Baltic Wharf for a few hours while you walk into Totnes and have lunch or look around. It's tidal, so check tide times first, and maybe get a chart. I go up in my 25 with no problems at high tide. And if you wish, you can stay overnight at Dittisham or Dartmouth and just enjoy the area. The Dartmouth Regatta at the end of August is well worth a look, but can be a little busy!
And send me a PM if you fancy meeting up at some point for a run.
John
