Pride of Bilbao, is that by JRR Tolkein?
Harbour patrol couldn't stop this happening...

I have on occasion seen some very scary close quarter situations between sailing and power vessels entering and leaving via the small boat channel and witnessed absolutely Zero intervention from the HP boat and conversely been ushered or maybe that should be compressed by the HP cat for appharently no reason at all.
To me it would seem that their is either a real or percieved??? consistancy of approach issue from the volunteer patrols at times which if addressed would avoid some of the posts made here and in previous threads?
A bit of practical common sense would go a long way.
The cross tide from the flood coming up the Inner Swashway is worse in my experince. Lots of boats when leaving against the tide seem to get swept out into the main channel before they realise what's happening, which causes problems for any incoming boats trying to use the small boat channel. If leaving against the flood stick as close as you dare to the red posts and turn to Starboard at the very first opportunity to stem the tide.Yep you do have to be careful of the ebb coming out of Haslar creek.
You mean like following the byelaws of the harbour????

There's a bit when sailing into Portsmouth in the small boat channel that rarely has much wind. It would be too much chaos if people could all just have a go at sailing in without engine. No one would ever get in.
Steady on there Snooks we have to stay within the bounds of reality here. Clearly some believe the bylaws do not really apply to then.
I mean like bullying yachts into doing something that increases the danger.
How does "TURN YOUR ENGINE ON" increase the danger - unless of course you have a dodgy engine that is about to blow up?
Really ... honestly?! So - the wind is totally reliable and will move your craft in a preditable manner with constant speed .... so everyone else can judge where you're going 2 be to keep clear.sail is most reliable means of propulsion

Then you should FIX YOUR DODGY INSTALLATION!If you have an outboard & lower it while underway it can pivot up & brake off the fuel line.
If you cannot lower it and start it on your approach then you should PLAN your approach better - go hoveto earlier and get the engine down and running ....For the sake of 50 yards IN CERTAIN CIRCUMSTANCES it is also an unnecessary distraction.
