"Move over & start your engine"

Harbour patrol couldn't stop this happening...

Well she was only stopping at the Still and West for a couple of piunts before her last passage.

I must admit it used (many moons ago when I was a young submariner) too be good sport to watch yachties try to sail in or out of Portsmouth from the terrrace of the Dolphin Wardroom bar.

Jobsworths they may have been but some one who deliberately flouts the bye laws is mosrt likely to be assumed to be a plonker or some one unaware of the risks, rather than a competant yachtsperson.

I would like to know if that "Volunteer Harbour Patrol" have to have any qualifications or real sea going experience because frankly their seamanship seems dubious.
Panicking at the sight of a yacht going through with a good breeze & a favorable tide seems crazy to me.
I am the first to start my motor when necessary & they have without a shadow of a doubt increased the danger rather than reduced it on a number of occasions.
They would be far better to concern themselves with motor boat owners some of whom think their only option is to pile on the power in a tight situation & are completely oblivious to the problems that their wash can cause.

I have on occasion seen some very scary close quarter situations between sailing and power vessels entering and leaving via the small boat channel and witnessed absolutely Zero intervention from the HP boat and conversely been ushered or maybe that should be compressed by the HP cat for appharently no reason at all.
To me it would seem that their is either a real or percieved??? consistancy of approach issue from the volunteer patrols at times which if addressed would avoid some of the posts made here and in previous threads?

A bit of practical common sense would go a long way.

There's a bit when sailing into Portsmouth in the small boat channel that rarely has much wind. It would be too much chaos if people could all just have a go at sailing in without engine. No one would ever get in.

Yep you do have to be careful of the ebb coming out of Haslar creek.
The cross tide from the flood coming up the Inner Swashway is worse in my experince. Lots of boats when leaving against the tide seem to get swept out into the main channel before they realise what's happening, which causes problems for any incoming boats trying to use the small boat channel. If leaving against the flood stick as close as you dare to the red posts and turn to Starboard at the very first opportunity to stem the tide.

How does "TURN YOUR ENGINE ON" increase the danger - unless of course you have a dodgy engine that is about to blow up?

Providing the tide is with you sail is most reliable means of propulsion & most people rely upon their engines until it goes wrong.....Which is what happened to me once going through Portsmouth Harbour entrance.Thank God I had the sails up!

I mean like bullying yachts into doing something that increases the danger.

Ponting out you were in contravention of the rules, and asking you to obey them is hardly bullying is it? :D

If you'd had you engine on to begin with (as required by the harbour byelaws) it wouldn't have been "more dangerous for me to have leant over the back of the stern to start the motor"

Hundreds of yachts manage to go through that gap all following the rules

Why do you think you should be an exception?

sail is most reliable means of propulsion
Really ... honestly?! So - the wind is totally reliable and will move your craft in a preditable manner with constant speed .... so everyone else can judge where you're going 2 be to keep clear.
The byelaws don't state you have to go in barepoles .... just that you are underpower ...

If you have an outboard & lower it while underway it can pivot up & brake off the fuel line.
Then you should FIX YOUR DODGY INSTALLATION! ;)

For the sake of 50 yards IN CERTAIN CIRCUMSTANCES it is also an unnecessary distraction.
If you cannot lower it and start it on your approach then you should PLAN your approach better - go hoveto earlier and get the engine down and running ....

Nothing in the byelaws to say you shouldn't get the engine running earlier is there?
