So I can find a lump of ply, any one know of any easy to find clamps that might do the job... or have any other suggestions?

Cheers

UK chandlers have them

Or you can use Stainless U clamps - also widely available

If you make it so the thickness of the mount is the same as that of the transom you will spend a lot less time adjusting the outboard's mounting screws when you take the motor on and off.

Get two pieces of 1 inch ply, clamp them together, drill a 25mm hole through them, drill 4 holes in each corner, bolt to rail, clamp on outboard. cheap simple it works. Presuming of course that your rail is 25mm. keep it simple, keep it cheap. If you can get hold of polythene or nylon instead of ply it would be maintenance free.

This is how mine came with the boat and works well. Also as Xlantic suggests it has a piece of ply screwed at the top to compensate for clamps.

That is what my previous owner fitted, but propriety ones

I have a pair of fittings that were marketed under the name of Plastimo but made by some Swedish firm. They are a bit like the clamps shown above, but in white, and are much neater than a sheet of ply. I haven't seen them in chandlers lately though.
