Has anyone any thoughts on the Odin 820 (Imexus 27). Are they a) easy to sail and b) suitable for a novice sailor? I ask 'cos we are thinking of going down the sail route in a a year or so's time and they seem to fit our requirements re internal space etc. I don't understand some of the sailing terms and before anyone asks, we will get tuition before heading out. All comments useful, amusing etc gratefully received.

I have never sailed on Odin, Macgregor etc. but they strike me as not being either a good motor boat or a good sailing boat so might give you a false impression of sailing.
I have read an account in one of the yottie mags about a trip to Spain, I think, in a Macgregor? and having mixed views on the idea.
If you are serious about sailing I would probably go down the route of getting a more stable conventional boat that will look after you and won't scare the crap out of you if you get caught out in a blow. Accomodation and motoring speed aren't everything when it comes to sailing, most of the pleasure (for me) comes from having a boat that can sail well and make me want to get the best out of it. I may be wrong but I just can't see how the speedboat with a mast can do that.
But hey, if it gets you on the water and you have fun...great.

My feeling would be learn to sail first, get a few charters in as well, maybe as crew, then when you feel confident, go out on a test with one of them and see what you think then.

My personal feeling is that if you like it, and it gets you on the water, then great! BUT remember these are the ultimate compromse boats, they are not great sailors, and they are not great mobos, and I suspect that I would come away wishing I had chose something that did one or the other well!

I fellow in our boatyard has a Macgregor 26 and uses it with his young family and says it has quite a good sailing performance and when it's not windy he can use it for ski-ing.
Not my cup of tea but he seems to get more use than the majority of boaters.
