In a recent discussion with people in our boatyard, some people are of the persuasion that a Semi Displacement Motor Cruiser could not cross the Atlantic. Now on this matter I am a wimp and remain on the fence, i.e. I believe it can be done but it's not for me!

Has anyone or do you know of anyone who has crossed the Atlantic in a Motor cruiser less than 40 ft in length? What was the costs involved and what was the size of there fuel tanks? any web links to successful passages would be beneficial.

If so give me the details so I can solve a minor disagreement in the yard.

on passage between bermuda & azores we were passed by a motor boat of around that size doing a delivery trip from florida to europe. they were making about 8 knots.

the biggest problem is carrying enough fuel, you'll have to go pretty slow to get the economy necessary. nothing to stop you adding a jury sail to help you go down the trades.

I would not like to do that trip , not sure about not seeing land for ages or no access to fresh food? But what are the sea like ? is it big seas, how long can a mobo hold when seas are gig for a long time?

Never thought of the added sail option, good idea, will pass it on. I have since discovered that a smaller boat than mine, I have a Seamaster 34, apparently there was a chap who motored his seamaster 30 from Scotland to Iceland, then accross to Greenland then all the way down the east coast of the Americas to Rio, took about 18 months to get there but he had retired and had the money to do it, WOW.

There is a fine line between stupidity and bravery

Please could you tell me why this is on Scuttlebutt when there is a Mobo forum ?

Ok - sorry it wasn't ScuttleButt but the point still stands.

I don't think the point does still stand actually.

I wasn't aware that the liveaboard forum was restricted to raggies only. He's asking about long journeys by sea - which would necessarily entail living aboard. My Old Man lived on a 55 ft TSDY for years with not a sail in sight.

Not given to ranting but, somehow, the narrow minded predictability of this post has irritated me. It must be Monday. Harumph! /forums/images/icons/frown.gif

And another thing........

From the blurb on the Main Index page:

<<Exclusively for those who live on their sail or motor boats>>

last year when we where at lowestoft a princess 420 came in just arriving from russia non stop it had a flexible fuel tank just laying there and taking up the whole of the cockpit area. didnt seem right as the boat was new but looked a wreck with 3 scuffy comrads on board very scuffy as well, however they had just done some serious miles. they folded the tank up and stuffed it down the lazerett refuled and headed to st kats

Quite happy to rant. I'd be prepared to see the tax allowance on red diesel disappear just to reduce numbers.

"predictable" - the way they go around in swarms and mess up others sailing.

No good - it's Friday now, so I'm feeling less irritable! Wait 'til Monday and I'll be really peed off again................../forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

PS: Diesel not an issue for me. My powerboat is petrol engined so I already pay a fortune in tax. My Mirror dinghy uses the wind, so it's free as the air. Whichever boat I'm out in, I try not to ruin everyone else's day.
