So lower down you guys gave us details of most stuck up clubs.

How's about some comments on the most welcoming. Your experiences as members and as visitors.

BOR

My club always tries to make everyone welcome. We're not open 24/7 but we do offer visitors free moorings free trot boat service at w/ends and our bosun is more than helpful to visitors.

I'm not a yacht club sort of person, never had a blazer since I left school etc., so anyone who makes me feel welcome is decidedly welcoming.
Hardway SC in Portsmouth and the Royal Victoria Yacht Club in Wootton Creek get my vote(s).

Advice for Tourists

I was just struck by the potential....

"When visiting Cowes, it is traditional to take your children to eat their ice cream and candyfloss on the lawn of the old castle, from where a fine view of the Solent may be had..."

..or a white flag with a red cross and union jack in one corner is known as the "gin pennant" when flown on a yacht. It means 'come aboard for drinks, all welcome'

Several years ago we found ourselves down in Jersey for the weekend. Driving around the Island off season there is little choice for places to eat. Needing lunch we found the Royal Channel Island Yacht Club. The beckoning smell of sunday lunch was too much. We entered and aproached the bar, the steward asked if we were the member of a yacht club, "yes" I said, chancing it " I'm a member of the RYA", A chap our side of the bar said, "thats close enough".

Lunch was great!

A long list of candidates, but....
Fowey Gallants; Cardiff YC.... And especially, the Royal Cork, where the new Admiral bought us a beer, for amusing them in the bar as we tacked, engineless, up the river. What he didn't tell us - then - was that he'd won a handful of Euros on us getting stuck, briefly, on a well-hidden mudbank!

No doubt at all. Scalloway Boating Club. Went on to their pontoon, then went in to the clubhouse to find out what we owed them.

"Oh, there's no charge for visitors, sir. And the first round of drinks is on us. Single malt, sir? Certainly. Would you like that as a double?"

Later on, they changed a gas bottle for us and refused any payment. When we asked about car hire to ease a crew change: "Don't bother. I've got two cars; you can borrow one for the day. Go and have a look round the island."

No doubt at all. Scalloway Boating Club.
