Most useful Utube vid ever?

'Inner net.... inner net.... inner net..... blah-di-blah'

I've 'gotten' more coherent speech from an episode of 'The Simpsons'.

Not being an Ocean sailor, more a big Bay sailor and overcoming the American presentation which, as they go, this wasn't the worst I've heard, also not having bothered too much with weather routing for a four day passage. I just pick a window that suits me, so I liked the idea of sailing to a pressure line, something to give more thought to.

Sailing to a pressure gradient would be better.

Isn't it the same as walking around a mountain less tiring than walking up and over the top?

Depends on how steep the mountain is. ;)

In the context of the video / advice of sailing around an isobar it is perfectly possible to see winds of 60knts or 5 knts at say the 1020mb isobar it just depends on the compression/ pressure gradient in the system.

some other series might be of interest for anyone actually interested in learning more about global weather >>

Surprising lack of weather knowledge on here (Apart from Frank of course, at least we have one who really knows what he's talking about ?)
Most seem happy with looking outside once in a while to confirm "my app is the best app.
So much to learn, 3d visualization I find difficult, windy helps with the altitude slider to see what is going on higher up.
Weather routing, never had any luck beyond a few days, still fun though. Opencpn plugin is a bit clunky interface but it works & interesting. plus you have grib/sat/synoptic overlays.

My experience long ago as a forecaster working with weather routers was that routeing works for fast moving vessels but less so as speeds get slower. If you are in mid ocean, the warning that you get of a rapidly developing low can be such that it is too large for a slow moving vessel to avoid. The post by Roberto at Predictwind routing #19 is worth reading. He has been there and done it.
My longest passages have been up to 3 days. For such periods, probably up to at least 5 or 6 days with forecast skill today, I see no value in weather routeing for the average cruising sailor. Wait until you have a suitable slot, set a course allowing for currents.
