MOST ECONOMICAL WAY TO GET A NEW RIB FROM UK OUT TO SPAIN?

I've just had a fridge sent to sant carles and is how being held in barcalona I've been just informed I've now got to pay 449 euros import duty.
i wouldn't mind but its not even the beer fridge.
regarding the rib why not get a lightly used one , I've heard theirs plenty in Dover

When my galley fridge failed a year or so ago, rather than buying a dual voltage, I just followed Hurricanes advice and bought a standard fridge in the town (which they actually delivered to the boat and lifted into place for me, excellent service) and fitted a small inverter to power it when on the hook. It actually worked out a lot cheaper! I did consider installing relays to auto-changeover but I just switch the inverter on when needed.

I‘ve been gathering all sorts of new bits for boat projects when I’m allowed to drive to Spain and I guess I’m nearing £2000.
I know now (I think) that I should declare my goods for tax when I reach Calais (even though I’m going to Spain). Will we be filling out customs declaration forms on arrival in the EU?
Although I’m a good citizen and pay my taxes with enthusiasm, I don’t want to fork out another £400
How old do my bits need to be to be “used” if that makes a difference?
Seems a shame that France will collect the tax although I’ll be using the goods in Spain

Are you registered on SCMCHAT?
We are discussing exactly this at the moment.
We are thinking of a "whip round" to get some professional legal advice.
You are very welcome to join the forum and contribute even if you don't keep you boat in SC.

I am in fact a member from some time ago and nicknamed DavidJ the same as here. I’ll check out the discussion. Thanks

No. You are allowed to temp import it for 18 months at a time.

You they take it out for a day and bring it back.
Thanks yes.
Just thinking about superchip with his fridge in customs in Barcelona. If he intended to bring his boat back to the UK this year he could apply (somehow?) for a temporary import of his fridge and not pay IVA.

Hurricane. Read this notice

Sailaway boats supplied for export outside the UK (VAT Notice 703/2)

The scheme does not apply but Section 2.5. Says how it is done.

It is just an export supply.
I'm sure that I read somewhere that the Sailaway scheme had been withdrawn - probably one of the false rumours that seem to be circulating.
But your link proves to the contrary.
Thanks for posting - thats very helpful.
I have a friend about to buy a new boat in the UK.
That link might help him lot.

I find the paper a bit confusing referring to overseas visitors, overseas persons and then:
UK residents, as well as overseas customers, may be able to buy a boat VAT-free
I emphasise ”may“

The "may" bit has been the subject of a discussion this morning.
My friend has a tax adviser on the case so he is clarifying that point.
