This time the fixed set. It suddenly stopped receiving anything, transmits okay though only tested over very short range but doesn't receive at all unless the squelch is turned down low enough to be on constant hiss. I'm trying to find someone with a spare antenna to test but in the meantime any suggestions? Am I looking for a new vhf or a new antenna?

You say it transmits ok, what sort of range are you getting when transmitting ?
If your in the UK, can you call the NCI for a radio check ideally 5+ miles away?
Have you installed anything electrical close to your set recently?
My money would be on the antenna / coax cable, not the set.

What vhf is it and how old, also antenna set up? How do you know it transmits? Distance of transmission? I’d be careful of transmitting with a potentially knackered antenna, you will fry the transistors.

I also had a receive-only problem which turned out to be caused by a USB phone charger plugged into a 12v socket. Removed it and replaced with another charger and problem solved.

Exactly the same happened to me.... the very cheap USB chargers chuck out so much RF noise that it swamps your radio. Can also happen with LED driver circuits and buck boost converters.
