Whether we need the nuc or conventional subs is not really a debate I can enter here. What I will say is that it surely is a matter for the Defence Ministry and not the Treasury.

The newscaster last night said we paid £900m for them and sold them as nearly new at around £250m. Quite a loss.

It is a lot more money than would have been made by scrapping them. The market for a submarine that was so advanced as this was vast, but most of those interested would not have been allowed to purchase a submarine like these (e.g. Iran) Those countries that actually run subs and would be interested in all four where really just Canada and Australia. Australia bought new and have had even more problems than canada in getting their latest generation boats to work. Canada reckon that the money they paid was too much cause of the problems they have had re-commissioning the boats and solving some of the problems that UK did not have time for once the treasury pulled the plug on them. Dont forget they had been parked on the scrap heap for several years. So I cannot really accept that they got the bargain of the decade, although if you look at the canadian news, they reckon that they were seen off.

Wether we need nuc or conventional, was not the issue, it was scraping the subs before two had even entered service, after all they only cost £900,000,000. Ok if they were old, worn out or obsolete, but these were brand new. After all how much difference would it make to pensions, schools or hospitals ?
But then what if you add all the other similar civil or defence cock-ups, what would it actually add up to ?.
Take our local council, decided on a park and ride and marine related workshops, estimate £750.000, cost £4,200,000. This was to ease parking for the Maritime museum, last year the RDA spend £2mill buying the old TA centre from developer who bought it for £1 mill. Now they have built a car park next to the museum, at unkown cost, basically making the park and ride obsolete. There was some bit on local news about the new Scotish Parliment building, over budget by £400 mil.
If you ran your firm or household budget this way were would you be ?, unfortunatly were not HMG.

Just noticed it on the BBC News site. There was no suggestion of serious injuries yesterday, some smoke inhalation, but no mention of anyone being in critical condition. Hope the others are ok. I have absolutely no experience. or knowledge of subs, but a fire on a dived boat must be an unbelievable nightmare. They obviously have drills to cope, coz there's no way you can open the windows to clear smoke. Very tragic outcome.

All present media reports are to the effect that the fire started as a result of degradation of electrical systems while the vessel was laid up in cold storage - ie. dumped on the rubbish tip. This accords well with the history of Canada's attempt to make these sorry lemons work since your countrymen dumped them onto us in 1998.

Maybe you want to phone up the family of Lt. Chris Saunders in Halifax and tell them that he got what was coming to him, as you have inside knowledge that Canadians can't operate submarines as well as Pommies.

Well, you rooked the trusting colonials again, so good for you. Canada still hasn't got these vessels up to speed after six bloody years and countless leaks, technical failures, and other examples of the usual standards of British industrial engineering and production.

Wake up, pal. It's not 1856 any more. England doesn't rule the waves, build products that anyone wants, or govern any populations beyond its own borders. Hell, it doesn't even govern Scotland anymore. Or, for that matter, London, either.

I haven't read the rest of this thread, with one fatality and one in a serious condition and others hopefully recovering it was obviously much more serious than first reported.

I have no idsea what caused the accident and I hope that all the injured will make a speedy recovery. However your ranting does you no credit.

wait a minute, where else are you going to get long range deisel/electric boats from?, the only other place you can get cut price boats is the Russians, being part of NATO that is a no no, so why did the Canadian Govt not commision new boats?
