You need to remember that Nicholas 123's prime source of materials for maintaining his boat is his local pound shop - and even then he often finds them too expensive!

So your earlier objection that it "age hardens & can become brittle" is not relevant.

Anyway exactly what do you mean by "age hardens" I understand the reasons why it work hardens and the theory of how it can be annealed but I don't understand the mechanism of age hardening in connection with brass.

I read the water mark as SVR. Found out quite a bit about the Severn Valley Railway but nothing about brass fittings !

My experience is that brass is more unpredictable than mild steel & I have had it fail for no apparent reason.I am going to leave it there Vic what you use is up to you.
