More mistrals in the Med this year?

First of all, a caveat is in order: we moved from the Adriatic to Carloforte in 2006, and our original plan was to stay here for a season or two, and then move on elsewhere in Sardinia, and maybe later to the Balearics.
But as it happened, not only we liked the place, but also made several good friends along the way, both locals and folks who have a holiday home in the island.
Bottom line, we are still here, and with no plans to move in the foreseeable future.
So, you might think I'm biased, and probably I am.
Otoh, I wasn't biased at all back in 2006, and there was nothing which forced us to stay, if you see what I mean...

So, my short answer to your question is yes, of course you could.
But there are pros and cons between Cagliari and pretty much any other places in S Sardinia.
Cagliari is very conveniently located near the airport, and the best marinas are at short walking distance from the city center.
Other places like Carloforte (SW) or Villasimius (SE) require almost a one hour drive from the airport (and the first, being on a small island, actually requires also a 40' ferry), but are located in places where it literally takes just minutes to reach beautiful anchorages.
Of which, coming to your secon questions, there's plenty, all within easy reach, and with a good choice, depending on the wind direction.
And of course, crystal clear waters is included FoC in all of them, bar none. :)
Actually, there are a few nice spots also around Cagliari, but surely there are better choices if you are more interested in a cruising base, as opposed to a convenient base, with all the services a city can offer.
For long term stay, overwintering in Cagliari (as Deleted User will do) and staying elsewhere during the summer might be a sensible choice: horses for courses, as always!
...Though of course it's less expensive to have one annual berth in one marina, rather than two "half years" in different places.

For anything more specific, just ask, either here or by PM/email, as appropriate.

OK - I'm interested
Could you whet my appetite more - could you name (maybe even post a few pics if you have the time) a few of those anchorages that you are talking about.

My initial thoughts are:-
We know Carloforte and, as I say above, we thought it was lovely when we stayed for a night - en passage to Menorca. So, it might be nice to stay a month or two (say end of May to July) and explore those anchorages from Carloforte.
Transfers of an hour or two - to and from the airport dont worry me
The distance from Menorca to the south of Sardinia is very much the same as the distance to the north of Sardinia - in fact the Maddalenas would be further.
It always feels safer making a passage to somewhere that you have been before - you know what it will be like when you get there.

So, yes, I'd like to PM you when SWMBO and I have "kicked the idea around" a bit.

No worries, glad to give you any further details you might need, whenever you will have made up your mind.

In the meantime, with regard to pics, you might have already seen some previous threads where I posted the following clips, just to give a few examples (with the respective anchorages in the links under the embedded Youtube windows):

https://www.google.com/maps/@39.1659245,8.242329,314m/data=!3m1!1e3?hl=en

But there are others, like the following (which btw are even nearer to the marina):

And all the above examples are around the small San Pietro Island, where Carloforte is located.
There are obviously many other beautiful spots along the coast of the main island, like these:

Thanks for the links and video clips
I didn't realise that there were those anchorages right next to Carloforte (actually on San Pietro Island)
I did have a look using Google Earth and found those ones on the south of Sardinia between Carloforte and Cagliari - I was hoping that you would point them out - they looked great on GE
The thing that surprised me from your videos was how rocky the sea bed is - my immediate thought was that you would have to set an anchor trip and loosing the anchor is a distinct possibility.

What are the sea temps like in (say) May and June?
We were in north Mallorca at the end of May and the water was a little too cold to swim - it was about the middle of June before it was really nice.

What about swell - is it easy to hide away if the weather builds up (like in the Balearics) or do you need to run for the harbour.

Having said that, it looks like there are some really great anchorages and the distances seem really close.
If we are going over for a month or two, it would be really great for some local knowledge/advice.

I'm sure I will have lots more questions later.

Yep, I just included a few of the nearest spots, but there are other very nice anchorages also further East, between Capo Teulada (the southernmost cape of Sardinia) and Cagliari. And also between Cagliari and Villasimius (right on the SE tip of Sardinia), as well as along the western coast.

You're right re. the sea bed, it's indeed rocky in some bays - arguably, the nicest ones, at least for snorkeling or diving.
But aside from the fact that there are also sandy bays, which you would probably prefer for overnighting, one advantage is the amazing visibility: anyone at the bow can easily see the best bits of sea bed where to drop the hook, even in 15m of water, and point you to them while anchoring.
That said, I did in one occasion get stuck (actually with the chain rather than the anchor, not that it makes any difference in practice), and a dive was necessary to release the thing. But one single occurrence in 9 years is not too bad, I reckon...

Re. sea temps, I'm afraid that on average it takes some time for the sea to get warmer after winter, because the mass of water is huge: we are surrounded by a sea whose depth is more easily measured in thousands rather than hundreds of meters.
So, it's usually around 20 degrees or so in May, and begins to gradually get warmer around mid of Jun - I suppose similarly to what you experienced in Mallorca.
Otoh, it stays warm for quite some time at the end of the season: we had 25/26 degrees yesterday.

Swell in anchorages is rarely a problem, not because there isn't any of course, but because the prevailing winds are NW and SE, and a sudden, unpredicted reverse of the wind direction is extremely rare.
Again, it happened to me only once that I had to wake up in the middle of the night to pull the hook and move elsewhere.
And the fact that there are much less passing boats than in Costa Smeralda (or SoF, for that matter) means that zero speed stabs are not a must.
Obviously, you must pick your anchorage according to the wind, but that's no big deal - as you possibly noticed, in my previous links there are places sheltered from either one or the other side.

Oh, and just to jump back on topic, the strong Mistral which was predicted did materialise, and right now it's indeed blowing a hoolie.
Luckily, the harbour is very well sheltered from NW wind along the vilage side, but I can see the wave crests hitting the harbour wall in front of us, with just less than half a mile of fetch, just to give an idea!
But to some extent, the forecasts also in this case didn't prove very accurate, at least timewise: just a couple of days ago, they predicted that the wind was coming this afternoon, while it actually began blowing strong already last night...

Thanks for that
I will be in contact when we have given it a bit more thought
We need to think it out carefully - maybe stay away from our home berth a little longer than usual.

BTW
I've just spoken to GSL (from these forums)
He is at Sant Carles at the moment
We usually get a smaller Tramuntana when the Mistral blows but right now Sant Carles is hot and windless - clear skies
Maybe this weather will move your way.

LOL, of course it will: as per last sentence of Deleted User post #12, I had to save some good weather for his arrival in Cagliari.
Jokes aside, it is indeed predicted to slow down a bit tonight, and calm down completely by tomorrow night, resuming the normal glorious sunshine service.
I just fear that this sort of sustained NW wind, towards the season end, usually cools down the sea temp a fair bit... We'll see... :nonchalance:

PS: just for the records, they reported F12 conditions in Corsican Sea today, and F11 just a bit further S, in Sardinian Sea....
