More Greek rip offs?

I think if you want a short holiday on/in a boat then probably the Greek islands are the place to go - very well organised for tourism - all the tavernas are set up to be entertaining and to give you a good time - at a price... but why not - If you are a long term live aboard used to cruising then you will almost certainly find that Turkey is far superior - wonderful (free) anchorage - some of the historical sites are breath taking inly beautiful and interesting- the coast line has some wonderful anchorages that are unpolluted - Just depends what you want but I would go back to Turkey, Tunisia, Morocco any day...... cannot say the same about the Greek Islands except the Ionian which are a bit more user friendly....

Re: More Greek prices

You are right that charges are going up.

Poros has been spending money improving the quay, adding a new platform and electricity. I understand that the town itself is now responsible for the port rather than the port police, although the same people (Panyotis and Lefteris) are still handling mooring fees, power & water, they now pass the money to the town I think.

More bad news is that a couple of weeks ago they introduced mooring charges in Methana and Vathi for the first time.

However, it is still peanuts compared to most places in Europe, as I see from other postings.

Re: Aegean

Hi Theodore

Thanks for the reply!

I completely agree with you about the Greek charts. We used to use Imray until the chandler gave us some of the Greek ones to try. Now totally converted and use them on our RYA courses.

We are pretty sure we saw a basking shark off Epidavros last summer.

Cheers

Re: More Greek prices

I've a Greek receipt handy, the charges are the same in all harbours and are based on the length of the boat.
There are 2 charges, the first (I think) applies to any stay in the harbour area (i.e. may be charged for anchoring) and is
Boat Length X 14.675 cents
The second part of the charge is for using the quay (stern to) and is
Boat Length X 17.608 cents.
So, for my 10 metre boat the charge 1.47 + 1.76 plus VAT @ 18%, total 3.81 euros per night.

Not a lot of peanuts really.

Just checked - I was charged that for 2 nights in Astrous /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
