I seem to enjoy challenging the conventional thinking and have come across another interesting engine... This time it is a 200 Hp piston engine (diesel available)...small, light etc., and seem to have similar benefits as the Wankel Diesel I have been talking about before, but if possible may be smaller (yup, it's the blue(ish) cylindrical "thing" in the front of the people in the picture) :

Claimed benefits are:

Higher Power & Torque
Easier to Rebuild
Higher Reliability (approved for use in aircrafts)
Quieter Operation
50% Fewer Parts
50% Smaller Size
Better Fuel Economy
Longer Time Between Overhauls
Very Fast Throttle Response
Liquid Cooled
Less Weight
Smooth "vibration free" Operation
Lower Maintenance Cost

Basically I thought this should be enough to be interesting for the boating community.

You can see more details of operation etc., on web site http://www.dynacam.com

Looks great.. cost is a bit excessive... $30,000. Though that was the aircraft version.. wonder if a marine version would cost less? By the same count their truck engine cost $12k.. and needs overhauling less often.

Despite the high cost of living, it still remains popular.

Some work still needs to be done...

Believe the cost quoted were for the pre-production engines and during my conversations, I have heard hints about $10K. for the marine diesel, when production is sorted out..

For $10k I'd buy one... course only need about 50 horses for my boat to chug along at hull speed..

Didn't see any plans for a smaller one on the website.

Wonder how they manage when "unthrashed" Guess the bores will glaze just like a regular engine.

Range

Currently only 200 Hp ... (biggest market apparently), but can be scaled up or down... Same problem though with early production cost though as above. However, if successful we should see further developments as with the Wankel Diesels - (different post) with ranges from 125 - 3000 Hp.

Space

Yes, space (and sound / vibration levels) are why the US industry are getting really keen on this and as my previous post on engines.

Gearbox comes as extra, but @2,000 Revs, you could connect this directly to a waterjet and have no gearbox, saving even more money, space and weight.
