more cruising chute snuffer questions.....

When rigging the cruising chute I presume the halyard attaches to the sail head. This must therefore pass through the snuffer neck....
what then hauls up the snuffer? This might be a very simple question but I am a snuffer virgin!

There should be a shackle on the snuffer head for the halyard, and a short strop inside the head of the snuffer which the head of the sail attaches to.

Or better - there should be a small pulley for the snuffer line at the top of the strop and a swivel shackle at the head of the sail. We have the pulley but not the swivel - might fit one soon.

Looks like your question was more basic.

A thin line runs up the inside of the snuffer - over a pulley or shackle at the head and back down the outside. Both ends of the line are attached to the base of the snuffer.

After hoisting the sail inside the snuffer, pulling on the line from the top - outside the snuffer, lifts it to the head of the sail, leaving a loop of line in your hand which you attach to the deck or mast before you let go! To snuff the sail you pull on the side of the loop which runs directly to the foot of the snuffer and slide it back down over the sail. Ours has a large plastic mouth on the foot of the snuffer.

Mine has a ring about 2" dia at the top and to which the halyard is attached. Attached to this ring are the snuffer, a short strop to the head of the chute and a small block through which runs the continuous rope that is attached to the bottom of the snuffer.

Up goes the whole thing, pull the rope to raise the snuffer, sheet in and off you go (having of course attached the tack to a rope through the bow roller). There was a post about this aspect very recently.
