Mooring strop diameter on swinging mooring

Good call. Big rope looped over cleat is best, and was about to suggest what I think you are now proposing - use of an offcut of thin rope tied tight around the eye multiple times to ensure no possibility of coming off.
No expert personally, but like others I was thinking not nylon for this, perhaps polyester better.
This is pretty much what we did on the Menai Strait. Our mooring contractor did not allow a rope pickup, which for us was 1/2" chain with a loop formed with a shackle. This was dropped over one of the bow cleats, then held firmly in place with multiple turns of the pickup buoy line, buoy tied to the other cleat.

You could use a dyneema loop around the cleat, then tie whatever diameter nylon/polyester lines you need to the loop; I use this when I need multiple lines around one single cleat, with round thimbles for each rope.
Interesting idea. Do you have a photo to show the set up?

Yep some have to learn the hard way!
Chain only now for me.
Warps parted in a major storm.

Not a great way to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the wrecking of HMS Conway!
